  1. Show us your Railroads!

asteconn, here. Which reminds me to install it. https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=14264 Update: 2 more shots of Shimokita & 1 shot of Gyoko, a fishing harbor, with a few hundred low-density population, plenty of farms, a castle on the mountain & a fishing port.
  2. Show us your Railroads!

Camaron, thanks, i turned UDI off now. aleking, very elaborate. jacqulina, I agree, his is great. Updates: a neighbor city Shimokita, which i just found out that actually exists, is composed of modern commercial skyscrapers, a high-tech industry, concentrated residential areas & a classic site that has its own police station, fire station, clinic, theatre & school. Very few plugins were downloaded from STEX. The majority was from other sites. I don't even have a name for most every bat/lot in the menu since it's in a foreign language. Enjoy.

cityhawk, very nice rural railroads. Yoman3, don't know what japanese means. Starting fresh with a whole new region & culture - nihon. Whoa took 20 mins to import a region map. Shown is Densha (train) City. Residential Simulator (Average Age Mod).zip
  4. My Outer City coastline view.

aleking, excellent city layout. I've been STEX-shopping. It's scary that I can recognize some buildings in your city: AGS Arbordale Stadium, Urban Parking Garage, Blockbuster, Century Movie Theater. Also great rail yard work. Keep it coming. GMT, I don't mind if you copy mine. Update: loving High Speed Rail Project, & the creations of BAT - Hong Kong / Asian Team Room. Could stare at the skyscrapers all day. The HSRP rarely has trains on track. Makes sense. Its station can connect to 2 elevated high-speed rail lines, 1 elevated rail line & 1 rail line both ways. https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16426 https://www.simtropolis.com/forum/categories.cfm?catid=153&forumid=1
  6. How much recreation is needed?

Eh... when I say a park/rec zoning, it's not like a 50x50 lot. lol. it's a combo of a few small $5 parks & trees & bus stops & a church & a private school, etc. at the center of a rez area. Compared to other people's cities I've seen, mine is nothing. In fact, the environmentalists would be after me if I were a mayor. I also like to put 2 $5 parks behind a bus stop as fillers. heck, i even stopped using football fields & small baseball stadiums cuz they're expensive & take up too much space. I have yet to spend 10k on parks in a city. Say, less than 5% of my city is park land.

That's easy. Look at one of my screenie. Click ... icon in the lower-left, 1st camera, click to take a screenshot, click ok to keep or trash can to delete.

Ultimately providing recreation (and its demand cap relief) is what limits your residential population. If you want high populations then you need to place lots of recreation lots. You see, when you start building a city there is a limit on how many sims or businesses you can have in each sector. For example at the start of the city, you can only have 20 000 R$ sims without doing anything to raise that limit. For residential sims, parks and rec raise that limit. For example if you have no parks and you get your population to 20 000 R$ sims then no more will move in until you place a recreation lot. If you place a large plaze that increases the limit by about 9000 I think. So with one large plaza your limit is 29 000. Place another one and the limit is 38 000 R$ sims. As you can see, as your city gets larger, this need is harder to satisfy because you have lots of large buildings, but nowhere to put new parks, but your city will stall without them. But parks are also a drain on the budget so go easy on them until you really need them to get more growth. The trick is to balance what you need with what you can afford. So you might be better off going for the more space efficient parks ie the ones with a lot of demand cap relief but which take up as little space as possible. I find the small flower garden quite efficient.quote> Wow. Sounds like a simcity 4 master. You could write a strategy guide. I've got a lot to learn about the game. Right now I put a park & recreation zoning at the center of a residential area.

Thanks. Keep 'em coming. 420, what exact troubles are you having? If you're more specific, we can give you a better answer. Basically, you drag a rail line across empty land, place 2 passenger/freight stations at both ends, connect the rail line with roads, public parking lots, bus stops, etc. Railroads merge if you overlap 'em together diagonally. Delete a 1x1 section & redo until you like the crossing. Watch it grow. The train cars show only as much as the usage of the line & stations. The more usage, the more train cars. Update: same rail for the city & GLR for individual parts of the city lines, new GLR tram cars, & bigger capacity stations. Gotta thank those who made the STEXes. https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16625 https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=15086 https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=4323

jacqulina, very original farmland in your CJ. Gridlock, where's the grid lock? Joe 90, looks like a watercolor painting. Super- Timo, could you wait a while? We handed out all the awards. Updates: the center rail lines are over 3000 in traffic. The western line extends into the dirty industry. Freight trains come & go non-stop. First time I've seen this orange apt up to 10000 resident capacity. There are 2/3 in the city. Shown is in northwest. I've found that I have to accommodate the larger buildings by adding accessible public transit or else they'll go empty. A convention center by a large train station & an upgraded commercial airport.

xiziz, amazing. The old buildings look like the mall in DC. wisher, please post some pictures when you're done. How about building some rice paddies beside low-to-medium-size houses separated by very narrow streets, some grocers & 24-hour convenience stores close to a rail line with ACed-in-summer/heated-in-winter booths? Did I forget those vending machines selling hot coffee? Search for a city at Google maps & click the 2nd button (Satellite) for ideas. http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&client=opera&rls=en&q=paddy+japan&btnG=Search http://maps.google.co.jp/ Update: a ground level rail tram line in the southeast. Crashing back to desktop was fun. I found a tip: build the GLR line first & stations last. There aren't GLR over one-way roads. You'll need NAM for GLR. The below are optional. https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=13515 https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=15116 BridgeHieghtLow&Suspen_FixedV2.zip CleanAir.zip

wisher, is that Japanese? Looks realistic. Dark_Jedi06, very elaborate. LP, keep it up. 3 more: SimTropolis Train Station front & rear close-ups & McDonald's (would you look at the fender-bender caused by everyone rushing for a morning bite?) https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=14728

anubis89, I wouldn't be surprised if you worked in railroads or on model railroads. aleking, awesome rail networks & industry. Love the freight trains. Yoman3, I didn't have a pic 5 yet. If you meaned the last one I posted above, the station in pic 3 is https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=2893 Jack Forge, industry needs rails/shipyards to move the goods. Freight trucks work not as well as trains/ships. S4 is rather complicated. Every bit counts. 1st, don't overspend on services. Then provide the city with the means to grow. Rather it be transportation infrastructure or education or services. The southeast of my city was dead until I built 3 train stations. The biz along the rail line boomed immediately. Oh, I didn't start to build up the railroads until I made money. Only roads at the start. Over $1mil surplus. I'd assume it's the same for others. Thank you again. Haven't played in a while due to XP reinstall. 2 more screenies: moblize the army (SWAT), World Poker tourneys & dirty industry.

cityhawk, good ruralness. nissanskyline1235, love the high tech industry. anubis89 (that a plant?), I bow down to you. Everyone else, thanks for the comments & ideas. I'm always looking for ideas. smstevenms, road bridges are built manually. Must get NAM. Then click the 2nd last road construction icons, hit tab to loop through a series of road structures until it matches, shift-tab to go back, home/end to rotate. Takes a few mins. Keep the same icon on & build the rest instead of one bridge at a time. There are like 20+ structures. https://www.simtropolis.com/modding/index.cfm?p=details&id=380 The 2 redish/brown buildings with 2 helipads each adjacent to the large train station are large hospitals, if anyone is wondering. Up to 6500 patient capacity. The 3-track rail station is SimTropolis Train Station. You should go STEX-shopping. Search for a keyword like train. You'd be surprised to see what you get. https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=14728

If I remove one large elementary school, the other will run out of space for students. Last time I checked, both were near max. capacity. There's a large high school opposite them. & a college in the west. Forgot to mention there is a high tech industry in the southwest. A large & 2 medium water pumps powered by a separate wind power turbine. The air polution is zero anywhere except for the northeast dirty industry where there is a water treatment plant by the water. The emphasis of this city is railroads. I have some other cities that use mainly subway + elevated rail, elevated rail + monorail & all of them. BTW, I used to play Railroad Tycoon for DOS until it wouldn't work in XP anymore. The game was great for rail lovers. Now if EA would release a simcity game with emphasis on rail... Here are two more shots after building a series of bridges to reduce the traffic between roads & rails. The western, southern & eastern train stations have like 2000 traffic on the tracks. The downside is the bridges attract 2000 road traffic each.
