    Community Interviews Maxis: Part 1

You spoke, we listened! All of us here at Maxis value you, the community, and to show our thanks, we solicited all your burning SimCity questions last week on our blog. Now it’s time for us to give back our love in the form of answers. Lots (and lots) of answers. We combed through your comments and picked out some of the best questions for Creative Director Ocean Quigley, Lead Producer Kip Katsarelis, and Lead Designer Stone Librande to tackle. We got so many great questions, in fact, that we’re going to split up the answers into two parts.

Players do not have control of placing roads and rail in the region, but they have complete control over the road and rail networks within their city boundary.

For the game to be multiplayer, they have to do this to stop people from building in your city boundary. In multiplayer, there will be objectives for you and your friends to accomplish. If they let you build in the region, you could deliberately control how the connections are between your friends and give you an unfair advantage. This reminds me of how multiplayer works in Civilization 5, and that game had the best multiplayer ever.

I’ve seen the possibilities with customization. Glassbox, and the new simulation engine. This will be the best SImcity ever!

But the issue is that there is no other game than multiplayer... no solo mode. So these crazy restrictions that being placed so people can't get the advantages while playing other players now gets incorporated in all the cities you play even if you want to play by yourself. This means no custom content, no mods, no ability to place your highway connection where it's appropriate in your own city. In the real world cities work together on where the connections are placed, they don't let a magical higher force choose for them.

If my whole game has to be dumbed down and changed completely from what sim city used to be, just so the 4 people who actually want to play multiplayer can have equal advantage... then they just stabbed themselves in the back. And you seem to support this idea. Civ 5 even has a solo mode where the rules don't apply, so while their multiplayer is awesome, the players wanting to play by themselves still have the option... and they ADDED gameplay with each release, not stripped it away and dumbed it down.

You can still play in solo mode, by yourself, but there is an always-online/connected to Origin requirement. This becomes a problem when EA shuts down their servers for games, as will most likely happen with SC at some point.

Then enjoy it while you can.

    Are you serious? =.=

"Enjoy it while you can" Yeah sure... Then I guess you wasted $60 on a game you can only play for 10 months.

Well now I know I wont be buying sc5 they took out what made SC4 great, terraforming, entire control of a reigon, mods(trust me they wont let them in), realism. Now its a dumbed down mix of societies and sc4 that will captivate the attention of the 8-12 year olds they seem to be marketing to and leave those with paitence and those who want a challenge with nothing. Just cant belive theyve made this game pretty much unplayable if you want to create a metropolis or anything remotley close to a real city.

They are hiding something big I bet...

If they arnt, the game is doomed

Yeah there better be a zombie mode after you spend 30 minutes filling your entire city tile.

I've seen quite a bit of over speculation on the forums, but I'll admit the news from the developers themselves has me gravely concerned.
