Oil! (Disaster)
Oil, part 2
CJer's note about not ripping off current events:
I wrote this story line way back last winter, as shown by this early entry. But now the BP Gulf Crisis makes it look like I'm just ripping off real world events. I'm not. So there.
As stated before in this CJ, Bordav discovered in the 1880s it sat on large tracks of oil--the largest reserves on Syldav Island. This discovery literally fueled Bordav's economic expansion and dominate on the island for nearly a century.

Bordav make great efforts to organize its entire economy around oil. Buses were favored over rail, oil power plants over everything else. Moreover, Bordav shaped Peotav into a co-dependant oil trading partner, further supporting Bordav's economy.

Bordav In 1983, however, disaster struck. A gas leak lead to a fire. Bordav's military, at the time running exercises along the Syldav border, was unable to respond in a timely matter. The rig didn't sink, but 72 bodies were found on the charred rig once rescue workers arrived the following morning.

The rig had been located near the Delta Port of Shozhod--an area already in environmental chaos from the shipping. Ecologically, the oil right was a massive disaster...

The impact was massive. First, Bordav's population depended on fish from the delta region for much of its food. Second, Bordav's oil production was dramatically hurt leaving higher oil prices and damaged trade with the co-dependant Peotav.
Not the makings of a peaceful neighborhood.
