Entry no.24 - Downtown Dresden

TakemeThere

4,033 Views

Drseden's city center is the fifth largest commercial in the region, behind downtown & uptown Pretoria, Calgon & Garden City but ahead of both Cisco Bay & Lindin City and a few others. This which makes it the largest city center I've previewed to date. It's more on the generic side and probably has the lowest amount of custom content of any of the high rise nodes. Out of the 32 buildings that I would consider as being highrises in the downtown core, exactly half(16) are custom content and the other half are generic SC4 vanilla/rush hour buildings. I'm not entirely pleased with the spacing & placement either but the problem is the city suffers from some kind of bug and high density residential buildings simply won't grow despite having high demand and land values. So the city is stuck with the originally built out for residential. That being said, the one thing I really like about the skyline is with how it's nestled in between the ocean and mountain(s). Here's what I mean;

Of course it wouldn't be a city center update without the obligatory top ten tallest buildings list;

In comparison to
Cisco Bay's top 10;

& Lindin City's top 10;

And a new feature going forward as the city centers get taller with be the tallest buildings timeline list.

Great update, the panos of the downtown are really nice. I liked a lot the idea to showcase a timeline of the tallest building in the city. :yes:

Yes, me too. Also I especially like pictures 3 to 6, with the viaduc. Nicely realistic.

Well used space, antenna hill very good use of MMP´s. Downtown bat´s are about average, TGV a bit out of place with such a old station, well done !

Glad you liked it. I regularly update tallest building pages on wikipedia and one of the things I add is a tallest building timeline so I thought why not do it for the CJ as well?

Thanks, the viaduct is one of my favorite parts of town, it's full path will be shown in the next update.

WOW

Thanks! :D

Ty and yeah, the custom bat's used are a little more on the older side. I try not to use the same commercial bat's in different cities in the same region. Dresden is a little more on the older side and most of the work on buildings was completed many years ago. I added/changed a few commercial buildings recently but flawed as it may be for some reason I didn't want to completely change the character of the city by added a whole bunch of new bats. Residential buildings won't grow anymore for some reason. I used the buildingplop feature to add the new tallest, but the problem with that is that there is no traffic coming from the building and I enjoy seeing how traffic is routed across the transportation network which I what I've spent most of my time working on, rebuilding old maxis highways and railways to the RHW & RRW with fractional angles.

Awesome to hear that :)
I plan on updating the CJ more regularly for the rest of the year and into the beginning of next, hope you'll like what's next.

The layout of your downtown core reminds me of a SC3k city I built seemingly eons ago.

Something about the hill with all the masts atop it - very unique to CJs yet very life-like.

I did also notice that several of your pictures appear to be flipped (#s 3 and 5 at least).

Cool! That's the same type of concept I used - squeezing in highrises nodes between natural obstructions. Glad you liked the hill its one of my favorite creations. I would also love to see more people doing it as well with the bat's I've put out. Yup 3 & 5 were flipped truth is this particular downtown hasn't change very much since I first built it out many years back. It's like it didn't really feel very 'fresh' to me anymore. So that was something I did to make it look more dynamic.

Probably my favorite entry so far. Wonderful rail and road work here. Couple that with a nice blend of Maxis and custom content, and wow. Impressive!

@JoshuaGellock A little late, but thank you very much for the comment :) Neat to hear it's been you favorite(up to that point), hopefully I can do better still. It's quite surprising how many people dislike vanilla maxis buildings, but still like many of them. One just has to keep a lid on repetition and most of them will still work well.
