Schulman Day 2014

Schulman Day is one of the most important observances in Schulmania. It is observed on 01/14, the fourteenth day of Schulmanuary (the month resumes being January after Schulman Day). It is the date of birth of the mythological founder of Schulmania, Schulmanicus Rex. This event is marked with great celebrations, parties, gift exchanges and feasts. It is similar in scale to Christmas celebrations. Other major Schulminion holidays include Wirdle Day (02 April) and Day of Schulmania (01 July).

There are many legends and traditions that go along with this holiday. Much like the rich and varied local traditions revolving around Christmas, different versions of gift giving and holiday cheer have developed over time and grown as part of Schulminion culture. Some of the key characters in the Schulman Day tale are the Holiday Hawk, bringer of glad tidings, and Belle, the vulture who brings woe to those who displease her. Cultural anthropologists see similarities between these two and Santa Claus’ “naughty or nice” lists with gifts of toys or lumps of coal. Another, different type of character is Ambassador Robert Fox. He delivers tasty treats to those who have been good neighbors and friends.

So, for now, as they say in Schulmania: “Happy Schulman Day…. Celebrate your Schulmanity!”

Legend of Ambassador Fox

Ambassador Robert Fox’s story is the one not with an analog to established traditions in other cultures, with a good guy and his corresponding bad guy. Those roles have been filled by Belle and the Holiday Hawk. Fox is something different, altogether. Perhaps his legend was spawned by the disposition of Schulminions for cooperation and friendliness. Perhaps, long ago, there was a Robert Fox who actually did go around delivering donuts. But, enough of speculation, let’s read the actual legend.

Long, long ago, back when Schulmanicus Rex was still around, small groups of Schulminions lived in small settlements on the hilly isle of Schulmanicus. Each day, the Schulminions worked on their farms and each night they went home to relax and tell stories and play games. On weekends, many neighbors would gather for fun and excitement. Fast-paced games such as freeze tag and catch kept the neighbors happy and friendly. An observer would think that it was truly a perfect world. But, that observer would be wrong. Hard work and isolating professions made it difficult for the close bonds Schulminions seek. But, who could rise above this and find a way to bring Schulminions together in friendship and support?

Young Robbie was a happy little fox. He scampered around the woods by day and relaxed in his cozy den by night. He liked living near the Schulminions; they provided him plenty of food and they would often stop their work to play with him. But, he knew that the Schulminions were sad. They were so busy raising crops that they did not get a chance to celebrate with one another very often. What could he do to help his friends? He knew that Schulman Day was coming up and that the Schulminions were very excited. It would be his perfect opportunity to show his gratitude for the friendship he received. He needed something which would bring great delight to the townspeople. Since they all craved sweets, he knew he needed to get them all some sweet treats. He stealthily crept around and obtained all the supplies he needed.

Then, on Schulman Day eve, well in the night, when all the Sims were snug in their beds, Robert Fox went to work. In his den, he labored over a hot stove and spent all night crafting his sweet sensations. When he was done, he filled two bags with his creations and went to the village. He visited every house and left each a basket full of his wonderful circular pastries, which the villagers called “donuts”. As the dawn broke and Schulman Day began, hoe after home erupted in squeals of delight when the tasty discovery was made. But, who had delivered these tasty treats? The townsfolk asked their neighbors, but no one knew. Then, a cat picked up the scent of sugary glaze. The people followed the scent trail back to the den. There, an exhausted but smiling Robert Fox greeted them and wished the town a Happy Schulman Day.

“Why did you make all of these lovely treats?” asked one little girl?

“You all have been so kind to me. I wanted to show you my appreciation by giving you something as sweet as you are” replied the fox.

A village elder spoke up: “We can learn a lot from our friend the fox. We should all give our friends and neighbors recognition for all they do for us. And, not just on Schulman Day. We should make every day Schulman Day… in our hearts!” The fox smiled, knowing that his mission was accomplished. Now, his friends knew not only that they were appreciated for their kindness, but also that his act of generosity inspired others to do the same.

From that day forward, every Schulman Day eve, Robert Fox, the Goodwill Ambassador of Schulmania, stays up all night in his Donut Den, creating delicious treats to remind the kind and caring people of Schulmania that their spirit is the sweetest gift of all.
