The Home of Surfing?
Situated 20km south of Geelong is the home of Surfing, Torquay. While only having small waves, the title was a trick to keep tourists away from the better breaks further down the coast.
Torquay is a family beach that is patrolled by surf life savers for 4 months of the year. It can get extremely busy with life savers having to rescue entire families from the shallows 300 times a day. Not just patrolled by life savers, groups of 10-20 men can be seen patrolling the beach in the late afternoon looking for "pussy" or "fights". Recently the caravan park was moved due to the crime. Unfortunatly the caravan park was a major income souce for the towns unemployed which has led to higher crime all year instead of just summer. Unemployment is an issue in Torquay, with manufactoring, retail, industrial, farming and high tech jobs on offer, most locals feel they cannot make a choice of where to work and go for a surf instead.
WARNING-Do not bring your family to Torquay beach on New Years Eve!
