Henry C. Waters Housing Projects
The Henry C. Waters Housing is a public housing project located in New Marseilles, Eloisiana. The housing project is located in the Maynard-Percyville neighborhood of the city in the 4th ward (Central-East) section of the city. The housing projects is considered to be the largest housing project in the 4th ward as well as the city and entire metropolitan area. The projects are named after a local New Marseilles businessman Henry C. Waters, who owned the land and the country Club which occupies the northern lot adjacent to the housing projects. The housing projects occupies the southern lot.
Its official address is 17481 Maynard Blvd. on 49 acres of land, north of I-210 (New Iberia Freeway) at the intersection of Percyville Drive. The federally subsidized project consists of 42 buildings and was completed in August 1944. It is operated by the Housing Authority of the New Marseilles. The project is predominantly inhabited by persons of African-American descent with a few new arrived immigrants from South America.
Crime at the housing project has seen on average 14 murders, 28 robberies, and 2 rapes in the past 3 years. The NMPD's 4th ward police command center keeps watch over the housing project.
