Unofficial Expansion Pack

I do not know if this has been suggested here, and I almost remember suggesting it a while back, but what if the ST community were to choose a whole bunch of its favorite buildings and modds and package them as a sort-of unofficial expansion pack. This way, if someone wants to share cities they will have the same modds, which smoothens things out, and also is just easier to download the one big thing.. It might also show EA the true power of this site. I don't think you could legally burn all the things onto CDs and mail them, but if you had a list of the modds in the expansion pack or a large, downloadable file, that would work.

This has been asked before, and though it is a great idea, a. it would take a very long time to compile them in one file, 2. It would be quicker just to download them yourself and lastly., well,...I can't remember the last one! 3.gif

Hi Yes their is legal issues with it you would need to get permition from ea games. Also if you put all mods on a cd you could run into memory problems and if you get pass the memory problems then you would run into another problem which would be the speed of computer during the game, well it depends on the ram memory. Ram memory get used by what ever you see on your monitor so in the game all the art in the game would use the ram memory to display. Ram memory is a temperarely memory usage.
To make this short it is easier to download separate mod files so that you won't use memory on the modss you don't want.

That would be handy, but doesn't the power of ST also lie in the regular updates, and new stuff that is constantly made?

Aren't there already like hundreds of threads on ST with this exact question. For starters there are legal issues like J.O said...and there are other issues like the bandwidth and the costs required to make the CD's in the first place.

I understand that it would take too much time and effort to package a load of buildings etc together and it would take up bandwidth. But do you reckon it could be done for JUST the prop packs and texture sets...? Because I am forever having simcity 'parcels' appear because i havent got a certain building/texture. It makes things very complicating, but if all these could be put in one 'patch' Im sure alot of people would be greatful!

just my two penneth...2.gif

Thank you for all your feedback, folks. I am usually one of the people that shoots down ideas on the official site, and it was refreshing to have one of mine royally annhilated. I suppose there is really no point, since nobody shares their cities anyway. I tried a board search but probably didn't use the right keywords, since a few of you said you've heard this suggested plenty.

I don't think it is illegal to make the CD's for yourself...but when you start distributing them for money, that's where the line MUST be drawn.

Why should this be illegal? I don`t think the EA has a copyright or something on lots, bats, mods that the didn`t make themself.

Guys the bandwidth solution is so easy to get around. All you need to do is use Bittorrent. That way you could make a page with a link to whatever bittorent client you want them to use like Azureus. Then for step two put a link up to the .torrent file which is very small and wont use hardly any bandwidth. If you have some of the hardcore members seed the file(about 10 of them) then the bandwith issue will be spead evenly and you won't have to pay for bandwidth. I think the idea of doing an unofficial expansion pack is great and would bring notoriety to the board and maybe force EA to pay more attention to what you want. I own a record label here in Detroit so i know the issues with doing it on cd and if you charged for it you would be taken to court and sued to death by EA. Also if you put it on cd you will have a manufacturing cost and that will make you all lose money. I think doing it my way is fool proof because it violates no laws and costs nothing exept the time it takes to make the executable file. If you decide to do it i'm pretty sure i can get the music distributor i work for to kick in new music for the expansion pack for nothing because it would be free promotion for us all.

I have a question for all the members of simtropolis.  The simtropolis community has a lot of members, and if I am not mistaking, a lot of new members join everyday, which would result in new members not knowing at first how to navigate simtrop.  I even somtimes have that trouble.  So with that said, why is it that whenever someone posts a question in the wrong forum, some members act like its the end of the world.  We can not expect new members to know what or when different requests are make or what questions were asked.  Can we be a little more civil about it, because sometimes it seems that some members here come of the wrong way.

Well theres really just too many legal sides to it. You really can't just make an expansion pack.

Maybe if you really like just tune in to sim mars for something different.19.gif

We could start another conversion once SimMars is done. Maybe with a midievil or futuristic/alien theme.
