A workaround to the blank blue STEX window that at least works for me on IE 7:

While normal copy-pasting the URL of the STEX item into the address bar of a new window has not worked, copy-pasting and adding "&v=1" to the end of the URL does.  This is similar to the URL used by the selection name links on the STEX Selections found on the top right of the Simtropolis Home page, and those STEX Selection links have apparently still been working for some people, though for me, only clicking on the STEX Selection item name above the author rather than the picture links had been working.

Hence, for SimFox's new SimFox TRB Towers, instead of just copy-pasting the plain address:

https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=20531

Try copy-pasting the address and then manually add "&v=1" to the end:

https://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=20531&v=1

Hopefully, this will work for others until a proper fix is implemented.

(EDIT:  Amusingly, clicking on either of my own links on this post successfully loads the STEX item page, while trying to get to that item through the STEX itself does not.  It seems the flag "&v=1" is being automatically appended or redirected to in my first link.  I wonder what "&v=1" is a flag for, though lifeless08 maybe right about all this being involved with the interceding donate screen.)

Ha! I have also noticed that the links to the most recently added items on STEX that appear on the Simtropolis home page (in the top right) also work fine. Its just not working when you try and access the downloading window from links on the STEX section of the website itself.

Odainsaker is right. It works omg! I'll be doing this while the bug is still unsolved but at least there is a workaround.

I too am able to defeat the STEX download bluescreen with Odainsakers &v=1 trick. I heartily recommend it! Perhaps someone in authority at Simtropolis could post this info on the homepage so that people could find out about this.

Thanks Odainsaker!!

same problem, I use IE 7

I just copy paste the URL in a new window with &v=1 at the end if it is missing. It works.

Iv'e found a way back into the forums, The page flip bug at least has yielded some reward, By having to manually change the last digit in the adress bar it was saved by explorer. I can now circumvent the home page and hop right into the forums. But the problem may lie with my browser. If any one has alternate URL's from topics here at simtropolis and has the same problems I had I suggest you use them to jump you directly to the forums

I have the blue screen problem, but strangely it only occurs in IE and IE7. I havent tried it in Firefox, but in opera it never happens.

I use Mozilla Firefox and I don't get the blue screen, but when I try to download the maps, I get a blank white screen.  It says done at the bottom, and has the web address at the top, but nothing on the screen.  No error message, nothing.  I can download the config and other STEX files but not the map files.  When I try IE, I do get the blue screen everyone else is talking about.

Didn't read all 20 pages of posts, but here's the work around I've been using since this happened.

Open two browser windows of simtropolis before logging in.

Log in to the first browser window and search/find what you're wanting to download but don't click for the pop-up.

Switch to the second browser window. Hit refresh.  On refresh you'll be logged in.  Now logout in this window.

Go back to the first browser window.  Click the pop-up link for what you want to download or look at.  The pop-up will prompt you to log in. Log in and the pop-up displays normally and allows you to download.

Continue browsing with the first window until you find something else to download and then do the same thing again in the second window.

It's pretty quick for me using alt-tab and ctrl-c for my password or user name.

Mozilla is about the only one that *fairly* works with the STEX now for me, but it is very slow and has sometimes difficulties opening maps.

I am just wondering and it hasn't been confirmed by anyone officially yet, but is someone working on this problem to have it fixed?

Is the problem a server problem (virus in the server) or a problem of the STEX's base files (or whatever you call them)?

Just trying to help.....

OK.  So what am I supposed to do here then.  I've tried most ways on this thread. Logged in, if I click on the link, all I get is a blank blue box.   If I log out, click on the link I want, it then asks me to log in.  When I log in I see some download info.  When I click on the download button.... I get a blank white screen!!!

I'm not going to install firefox just for this.

  1. I am still getting the blue box.  I went to the work around link but don't see anything that lets me download new things.42.gif
  2. Also, is there a way to make sure you don't send me CD's when I make a donation?  I don't use them and maybe it will save Simtropolis a little money.

Unfortunately, there are very little options right now. As far as I know, this is being worked on, but I have no eta to give you for a resolution. If you desperately need something, installing FF/Opera/etc. might be your best bet.

quartets: I don't have enough technical know-how to answer your first question, but as for the second there is an option in the donate screen to specify that you don't want the CD's. You can also put a mention when you through the PayPal process as well, letting dirk know. 4.gif

The STEX report thread and this general report thread have now been combined.

This is now the bug report thread to rule them all!

From the homepage...

STEX "Blue Box" Downloading Issue

There is currently an intermittent issue affecting some members, where they are unable to download from the STEX and keep getting a 'blue box'.

We are currently working to find a solution to this problem.  In the meantime a temporary work around has been found here.

This thread is also the appropriate place to discuss or ask questions relating to this issue.

Please do not start a new thread, in any forum regarding this problem.

Simtropolis apologises for the inconvenience caused.

I can assure you that the staff are as anxious to have this problem cleared as everyone.

Once again thank you everyone for your patience.

Out of interest...  those of you that are having the blue box problem....

What anti-virus / firewall are you using?

Norton Antivirus-windows firewall.I don't think that has anything to do with

it but it's worth a shot anyway.

At work I am able to download a file from the STEX with IE6 in the normal way, but get the blue box when I try to download a map.

Anti-virus/firewall at work is Computer Associates.

Edit:  OK now at home I can download both bats and maps with Fire Fox...  but having problems with IE7..  if I click on the link of the highlighted bat on the homepage sometimes it will open...sometimes the blue box...   I downloaded one file from the STEX page with IE7, but then when I closed IE7 and tried again got the blue box...

If you delete ALL the BROWSER history, Tempory files, cookies etc. It should load the window with the download info.

Thanks, &v=1 works for me, just a few extra steps to download. I never had firefox installed, so don't think that's the issue as some have suggested.

IE-7 doesnot work for me at all, it only shows a blue box. I have MacAfee's firewall and even when I close it, it doesn't change anything, so I think it's not a firewall thing. AOL, my principal browser works even less on ST, then I downloaded Firefox and now I can at least see and download from the STEX, but still I get that blue box for Maps. Besides, Firefox is very slow with ST, whether it's the STEX or the forums.

I tried what JamesDwho recommended and it works for me, but doing this for every freaking page in the STEX that I want to see is kinda very long and annoying.

I hope this will (and can) be fixed, because I have a few BATs to upload, but don't want to if the STEX is gonna stay like this or even will fall apart one day.

mrbisonm: Have you tried the solution tried on page 20 by Odainsaker? That seems to work fine for everyone.

Don't worry, it's not as if the STEX is broken. I, and many other people, are having absolutely zero problems downloading. That's why I'm thinking it could be a cookies issue, as the problem seems to be rather selective.

The STEX isn't going anywhere; this website is built upon the Exchange, if it goes, so does 98% of our userbase. Ain't gunna happen.
