Thanks for the comments! I am currently weeding through downtown adjusting several little things, and I decided that I may as well make some of them into updates. They are rather small, but a 2 picture update is better than none at all! Depending on how you guys like it, I may do more of this sort of thing in the future.

And now I proudly present to you......

EDIT: Lol, I spelled Klondike wrong. Too late to fix it now though!

Note: The region view pic is was taken while Downtown was in winter, so the parks are that ugly brown color you can see.

Stay tuned for future updates showing some close ups of the airport!
    Comments welcome. 10.gif

That is a very intersting place for an airport.

It is really great! I also like the regiong pic. Although I think the transition from High - Low density is a little 'rough'.

Other than that great updates! 40.gif40.gif40.gif40.gif

Wow- this is really looking good! I cannot wait to see more!

Is there any way you can post a zone map for your whole region. I see that you don't have any industry in your downtown (as it should be) but I'd like to know how the rest of the areas around downtown are zoned. Just a question really.

    Great work!

Thank you for all the comments!

Yes, the transition from high to med density is currently a little rough, and that is what I will work on next. The Airport was sort of inspired by the floating airport in Hong Kong, since I didn't want to use up to much space by putting it on the mainland, and it looks cool there. As for the zone map, I really only have 2 cities done (including the airport) so I will just post a zone map for downtown later on.

Can't wait to see more. Why don't you start talking about some suburbs or some industrial places? That would seem nice.

    Thanks for the comments!

I am having trouble deciding how far out to build medium density areas, so I put together 3 plans and am going to let you guys chose!

    riverdelta10qn.jpg

Plan 1 has the smallest ammount of medium density on the downtown side of the river, and a medium ammount on the opposite bank.

Plan 2 has a bit more medium density areas than plan 1, and has a more natural shape.

Plan 3 has the highest overall ammount of medium density zones, and has the most natural shape. I probably won't use this plan, however, since it would take quite a while to complete.

Voting begins now and will end Thursday 2/11/05.

    Please vote! 1.gif

Plan 2 for me... downtown sort of looks a little off, not saying it doesnt look good though, looks very nice!  but i would suggest making it look sort of slope down (the skyscapers) as it goes through Klondike Delta.  Right now it sort of resembles a wall, but the buildings there are awesome, dont take that offensively, u must of used the mod, but hey thats what makes the cities interesting.

Thanks for voting, and the reason downtown looks like a wall is because it was built along the river. Taller buildings will want to be along the water front to be more prominent and for the view, so you get the wall effect. The tallest and richest buildings in downtown are right along the waterfront, and as you move further inland, the buildings (generally) get smaller.

I am thinking about making downtown about a block smaller all around, but If I will or not is still undetermined.

    Please keep voting everyone!

Oh really, well then I guess I made a good move when I named the river in this journal the Klondike River. 18.gif

I have nothing against large med density zones (plan3)...

But if you think (like most people apparently) plan 2 is better, go for it!

All this info about Klondike fully answer my interrogations! A river somewhere in Canada/Alaska and a mint bar!

You get that wall effect in many real-life cities. Not here in Sydney, because of over-planning (I honestly want to throttle Sydney City Council sometimes for killing some of the best proposals)... The problem is that they treat the Sydney skyline as a static entity, and while it does look good, it'd be nice to see something REALLY tall down here. Right now Melbourne and the Gold Coast (which has a meagre half million people) are getting the new tall proposals.

Hopefully, though, something will come up when the CBD docks are closed down. That land is not in the control of SCC.

I'd go for plan 1 on the East side of the river, and put some Hi-Rise on the West side on the river (just a little) and then some mid rise like plan 3 (on the west bank that is).

Waiting eagerly for your next update. 40.gif40.gif40.gif40.gif40.gif

I say Plan 1, but with some blobs of medium density out to the Plan 2 or even Plan 3 line. You want a slightly uneven effect as the medium density concentates around transportation corridors into the city (either highways or mass transit) and the remnants of the downtowns of old suburbs that have been swallowed up by the city. 1.gif

Plan 2 for the east side of the river.Plan 3 for the west side of the river.

This will make the region look more like a modern metropolos and give it a real downtown feel as well as the suburbs which will bring out the downtown better then the river ever could.

So Plan 3 for the west and Plan 2 for the east....

    Good luck and great C.J.!44.gif

Looks like another nice CJ from MayorTim. I'm liking the looks of that airport. It's one of the best I've seen. As for the city itself, it's coming along very nicely indeed. However, that should be it for the skyscrapers. The amount of skyscrapers the city has now is realistic for a city which would have at least 1-2 million residents or so (That's including the suburbs, as well). It would be best to sprawl outwards with medium, then low density zoning.

That being said, I vote for plan 3 all the way. It may take a while, but it will look the best and be the most realistic in the end.
