BUS TRANSIT WAY

I'm not a modder or lot/bat designer and know nothing about it, but im wondering if anyone here who does, if they can make a transit way for buses, in Ottawa we have an amazing transitway system, which is much like a light rail or subway, but its transit stations and bus only roads, when the bus road meets the normal roads, there is a sign that hangs over the road that says BUSES ONLY/NO ENTRY... if you go to http://www.octranspo.com you'll see pics of the transitway stations and see what im talking about. As far as i know Ottawa is one of the only cities in the world that has such a unique form of mass transit using buses. So i would like to see if someone can make a transit way that works. 37.gif

A member named Edcase was making a bus transit lane mod. He was so close to being finished but then he vanished and hasn't been seen around here for a while which is a big shame. Sorry to tell you this but at the moment it's dead. If you go a page or 2 back in this transit networks forum, you should see the thread called Bus Lane Mod.

ya but not a bus lane, a bus road, for buses  only!! with its own transit stations, much like the Light rail, but better because it can use normal roads too.

there are lots called blocker lots on the STEX that block certain types of traffic on certain roads. using these, you can effectively set up what you're trying to. i'll have a look at the STEX to try to find them

Downtown Vancouver (Canada) has a BusWay, too, called the Granville Mall.
Currently it is under consideration to be entirely rebuilt... with a possible flex boulevard addition on the works...

I wanted to start a project in Fall 2005, but low support halted me... You can find the project here:

Leeds has a guided busway system, and there are plans to build one in Cambridgeshire.

Most cities in Italy have reserved lanes for buses, taxies and emergency vehicles only. It allows these vehicles to avoid being bugged down in traffic; at least a little bit, since these special lanes sooner or later unfortunately tend to end and the buses have to follow the normal roads again... so bye bye convenience. In my opinion Italy relies too much on private transportation, and the old cities were definitely not built to enable today's traffic levels. I live now in Switzerland, and I find it much better organized here...

Busways are excellent for places that dont have the level of traffic to justify light rail but need some sort of fixed route transit

Anyways, Heres something cool. In seattle, they got a bus subway. Its closed right now so they can get it ready for light rail.they screwed up the tracks when they first built it (thinking it would be a light rail) and now they have to redo the tracks

Isn't Ottawa's system pretty much a Bus Rapid Transit scheme. Dedicated Bus right of ways combined with fixed stations (bus stops on only a few stations, always stops at them and does not allow for people to push for stops), fixed routes, and a frequent time table.

They have one in Boston called the Silver Line, where some of the Buses run through converted streetcar tunnels. It has its benefits but I reckon it should just be turned into Light Rail.

The O-Train is a light rail system isn't it? it complements the BRT systems.

Rapid transit scheme yes, but all the stations have stops, and the bus road is for buses only, they connect to normal roads here and there, but there is never a gap in the transit way, except in downtown... ottawa's proposed light rail is a joke though... runs same route at transit way... but rather then replace the transiteay, they think it'll work with both bus and train... our mayor is a freak anyways.

I think Holland will that record to Sydney, as they're building a 35km long transitway here linking Windsor in the north-west of Sydney, to Liverpool, via Parramatta. But it's not free if that's what you mean... they built it parallel to major routes, though, it's not very popular for people travelling from Liverpool to Parramatta. Not sure about the north west one.

But yes, they're very useful. I use them a lot in my cities.

urbanlegend made a nice HOV (high occupancy vehicle) version a while back. You can build a roadway as usual, but plopping down a diamond lane at intersections will only allow buses to use it. I haven't used it myself, but I would imagine that zoning next to it will create problems so it should be placed carefully. Since this is merely a way to control traffic, you can have the road change between a normal road and a dedicated route as needed, the way OC Transpo does through downtown Ottawa.

I think the best description of this system is "Bus Rapid Transit," or BRT. It's basically just like a Ground Light Rail, but the vehicle is a bus and it's a roadway not a railway. They're fairly common in South America. They have most of the advantages of light rail but are much cheaper. Los Angeles just opened one (the Orange Line) and Houston is building one or two.

Pittsburgh also has three busways. They act light GLR only with busses. (In fact, the south busway shares some of its length with "T" Trolley tracks!)

My strategy for busways is to use 1dera3's road control lots and then transition to the ANT from the NAM. I find this simulates the higher relative speed of a dedicated busway. Anywhere I want a stop I just transition back to road and then plop the station!
