I started a BAT thread a long time ago, then I was made an NDEX BAT apprentice. I have had one NDEX BAT uploaded and have since just gotten back online. My stuff isn't quite up to NDEX standards due to lack of access to the community and tutorials. In other words I am way behind. SO I have decided to start a new thread (I will see about having my old thread deleted by the admins.
I don't have any screenshots for this post but stay tuned. I have been studying and intent to return to the fold in the next few days. I am going to start with mid sized RES, CO and CS  buildings.

Wow looks good already, although i think the glass at the roof and entrance could use some inside nightlights if you know what i mean.

Great to have you back at batting!!

Yeah, I agree about the night lights. I just hadn't got to that point yet. What I am really stuck on i s what to do about the base.....

I have the same problem with that. I build a cool building, great detailing, super nightlights, and a square box as a base.

So I deleted the entrances I had and elevated the structure 40 meters. I roughed out an idea for the base of the building. I am not sold on it yet and am counting on your comments to determine if I want to continue in this direction or try something else....

Hmm... now this is an interesting base for sure... I just think that base and main tower don't blend into each other visually. You could improve this e.g. by making some of the vertical elements of the main tower continue all the way down to the ground floor. Besides, the ground floor could be a bit higher or in any other way different from the others; I think that would improve the overall look as well. One thing I'm not really sure about is the arch.

Oh, and it just occurred to me that the tower might look interesting if the base extended only to one side!

Anyway, this building really has potential. 44.gif

I agree with T wrecks: this is an interresting base, but it needs a connection with the main building. T wrecks suggestion to let the vertical elements continue down is a good one, you could also choose to continue some horizontal element upward.

Or perhaps some of the horizontal elements of the base could continue to the top.......

Maybe....? A little radical I know but with some good textures and lighting it could be pretty cool....

I liked your second attempt for a base more. I would make it more narrow fitting around the tower and like T-wrecks says extend the colums of the tower down to the base. It looks a lot more logic if you use the same proportions through out the tower. Also exaggerate the height of the ground floor.

These horizontal elements what are they? It seems rather like gigantic sunshades that will only obscure the view from the rooms behind them.

The base and tower now look like two differnt buildings one on top of the other. They both have a lot of potential but putting two great models together does not necessarily make a even better bat.

You have made a very nice and quite elegant top on your tower, but your base is much more a concrete, heavy looking building.
IMO you should try to be more consistent in your design and follow the logic you used to make the tower in the first place.

The nighlights of the tower look very nice by the way, and I think this will be a great tower when finished.

But won't you need a new base for the tower then?

I like the idea though, making a complex of this bat. Good luck with it.!!

I have posted pics of this BAT in the NDEX apprentice Showcase but I am not even sure what my status is with those guys since I was away from the community for so long and not able to be productive. I have decided to resurrect a couple of thins I was working on for them and release them on my own. The first will be a building I have been calling Zeus Corporation. It sat around on the NDEX site for over a year with no apparent interest. I know it's not up to par with DT or superstar's stuff but I think it's pretty  cool44.gif44.gif44.gif

Don't count on this one hitting the exchange for a little while I still need to work on the textures and I want to read some tutorials on giving jobs to landmarks, custom querys etc....

Tragicomicus, you have chosen a difficult genre to excel in, there are just so many very good highrises on the STEX, try to find your own niche of style and buildings and I am sure you will be noticed.

I think for modeling technique and nightlights you have a lot going for you, it is rather your desings you should try to work on, (this is ofcourse my personal opinion so take it for what it is worth).

Why not try your skills at w2w highrises like you see on Manhattan, or more European modern styled highrises or highrises with different materials and colours.

Your Zeus Corp buildings is a very good example of a Corporate America design, I must say I like the top more than the base of this building. The large arched entrance is a bit off scale compared to the windows on the same floors. It is making me confused about the actual scale of the building. Still a nice highrise which I hope you will be able to finish.

Tragicomicus, these are both very good and you are indeed acro'BAT'ic with your skills. There are really exceptional elements to both of these BATS, night lighting texturing, attention to railing details etc. But in both instances the low rise element of the tower and the high rise element of the tower just don't 'fit' together.

For the first tower, I like the second version where you have added the curved horizontal sun visors, you are onto something there...but, I think the windows should be curved out to match, and then you should repeat that around each of the sides. If you don't want to change the windows, maybe make the curves a metal lattice work something like
    _______
    /\/\/\/\/\
    ----------

At least that way the windows will not be totally obscured.
Also, I'm sorry to say, none of the three bases does the tower justice. If I were you, I would use the shape of those unique transmission towers as a guide for your base and repeat that with solid stocky tapered columns...really anchor the building to the ground. Also, whatever shape you go with for the base, try to broaden it so that it is not so rectilinear. It hugs the tower on two sides, but extends quite far on the other two. This actually exaggerates SC4s peculiar viewing angle and makes the tower look too 2-Dimensional.

With Zeus tower, this is a really unique shape and I like the concept. Again, the base does the building no justice. The doors, and the 8-10(?) story foyer are a great idea, but it should either borrow from elements within the building (the glass atrium at the roof perhaps?) or the building could repeat elements of the door, even if it is just two or three bands of vertical windows...

At any rate this is only my opinion, and of course you are free to take it or leave it!29.gif

    Well,

While I appreciate your input I think I will probably finish these two buildings up and release them (or not) I don't know. The suggestions that were made would require basically a redesign of both buildings and frankly I am sick of them. I would like to try some smaller things (yeah maybe some w2w stuff) because my computer is not really up to these huge skyscrapers anyway. I love some of the stuff jeronij has done with seawalls and stuff. I use his a lot and would like to make some of my own. I just don't have a ton of time to devote to it. My wife is constantly nagging about the time I already spend on here. But you all know how addictive this game is.
I do appreciate the feedback and respect the opinions of the posters. We'll see what I pull out next.

If you are happy with the BATs, finish them and upload, and you can start fresh with something else.

Yes, indeed time is always a problem.

I have toyed with the idea of a midwest small town w2w set. The kind of buildings you see on the town squares of smaller towns and cities.

    For example....

These are buildings in my hometown of Kokomo Indiana. Not exactly architectural marvels but not every building is in real life.

That would certainly be a change of style, I for one would love some more w2w buildings.

Oh, I would really lover for you to develop lots like that, because I always seem to want them in simcity. They are exactly what is missing. 19.gif Stunning work!

Tragicomicus1, I was checking out your thread when I noticed the pictures of a small midwestern town above. I looked at the pics and did a double take. Kokomo Indiana is my hometown as well!! I was born there, but moved out by Galveston during my elementary years. Now I live in Ohio, but it was nice to see some pics of a place I don't get to see very often! I'll give you a ducky for nostalgia. 40.gif

EDIT: I think you should do the Court House.

    Wow,

I hadn't checed in here in a while and allthese great comments. Thanks All. I thought about doing the courthouse. Anyway, I just got a good Graphics Card (nvidea geforce 5500 w/ 256 meg ddr RAM so the BAT is much more rewarding. I whipped this together earlier today and worked on it some when I got off work. Here it is so far.....

I AM aware of the lighting rig issue and have the proper one but didn't change it so save the comments on that. I am thinking about doing all night lights instead of night windows. But that adds so much to the rendering time. Maybe a mix. anyway... Comments?
