Experiment: region with zero industry or commerce.

I'm currently building a city with no industry or commerce at all. The interesting bit is that it's the only city in the region, and is played on hard difficulty with no cheats. All employment solely provided by civic buildings. Here's the progress after 10 years with 40K pop.

CivicCity40K.jpg

Taxes are all set to 0%, since they would be a pointless addition to the budget. The $200K income is from tolls alone. Right now the roads are getting pretty clogged, so the next stage is transitioning to a 2-stage transportation network, with only subways in the residential area, and busses in the outer employment ring. I need to build a treasury capable of running the city for 18 months or so before I do this. Right now the piggy bank could only handle about half that.

When filled out, this city should be rather useful for testing commercial and industrial demand effects.

Update: I tried the transit switch last night, but went bankrupt before the commute engine could catch up. What I'm going to try tonight is running another year to pay off my initial loans and bulk up my treasury a little more. Then I will disconnect toll booth alley from the employment ring to take some load off the pathfinding engine, and try the switch again. Once the sims figure out how to get to work without driving, I'll reconnect the tolls to recoup every penny they earned at work and then some. 11.gif

you are a sick mayor. I'm glad I don't live in your city.

Keep posting on this. I find it incredible that you can have such a high income from the tolls.

    Indeed.

The tolls are the key to staying a float in a residential city.

    Great work.

    Also try highways.Big payoff!!

Anyway I'm keeping my eye on this.

I *think* that by lowering the budget for the colleges and other public facilities that provide the jobs you may save some pennies; keeping the workers...
    Anyway, good (and wicked) experiment18.gif

Good experiment, although not very 'informative'. Still interesting.

I suppose it's interesting from an experimental point of view, but I don't find the city very aesthetically interesting. It's like block buildings; efficient space-wise, but not very interesting or pretty. Sorry.

The commercial zones are what makes up a city and the industrial too, even know i never use industrial(its ugly). lol, but anyhoo, what purpose does this experiment even serve?

No real City could survive without an economical base like agriculture, industrie or commerce.
Economics are the weak point of Simcity4.

I'm not surprised this city is still going..I did a similar experiment and found the same results...

Its amazing at how SC4 really works if you think about it....

Anyway I gave up on that city, because it was very difficult to maintain and plus it was kind of boring...No comerce,no industry and not even a farm..

I kinda like this experiment as long as I'm not doing it...11.gif

Keep up the very intriging experiment...44.gif

I don't think experiments like this one are pure useless since we can understand the game better and better with more experiments. But it's a fact that we already know s

This expiriment is very usefull! Even to those people who make real cities.
When making a region, you may not want to have any jobs in a particular city, for some really strange reason.
Or, even for a normal city, you may have unemployment problems. The effect of civic jobs has never been tested in detail yet.

I would love to see how many people you can get to live in this pocket picking town. The mayor rating just terrible...

I aslo would like to know which civic buildings create jobs. And how many Jobs.

I'm intrigued to see what happens when neighbouring cities develop commerce and industry... neat, unusual idea. 1.gif

Let's not forget:  the purpose of an experiment is to set up conditions and test and see what happens.  They can provide useful information that can be used in future cities.

We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: “I am talking with you in order to persuade you.” No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing.    - Pope Francis

now there's something you don't see every day. cool. i guess that's a good stratagy that can be applied in areas where the zones are very far apart
