Hello All.

Quick question on the 4GB patch. Is that for total system memory or is that for available memory (system has 4GB memory but OS takes it's bite)?

Thank you.

Thank you.

The 4GB Patch allows SimCity 4 to use 4GB of RAM which is the maximum limit of a 32 Bit application

If your computer has a RAM of 8GB or higher you can apply the Patch.

If your computer instead has a RAM of 4GB then you can not apply the Patch as at least 1GB of RAM is needed for OS. In this case you cannot install RHW (Real HighWay) by NAM as this mod requires SimCity 4 to use 4 Gb of Ram. For this case you need to install the NAM no RHW Controller or NAM Lite version.

You can upgrade your PC to have 8 GB of RAM or you can buy a new computer if you want to use RHW at all costs

This is really not correct. Provided you have a 64-bit version of Windows, you can run the patch. Otherwise 32-bit editions of Windows have no ability to set the LAA flag, let alone make use of it.

Patching an app increases the limits imposed for RAM usage and alters the way system reserved RAM is handled. As such, regardless of how much RAM you have, you should run the patch. Ultimately it has no downsides and assuming the resources are available, can make better use of RAM. This is always going to be the best solution. Of course it can’t give 4GB to SC4 unless your OS/system has that much available memory. But typically SC4 will still have access to more than it would otherwise.

As for using the Full/RHW NAM controller, there are too many variables that differ between each user to say definitively whether it will or won’t work. The simple answer is try it, if your game becomes unstable, it’s a sure sign you are still running out of memory. Of course notwithstanding that if you don’t intend to use RHW, it’s a non-issue anyhow. Note too RAM requirements increase the more mods you have installed. So even if you don’t intend to use RHW, the 4GB Patch is still going to be useful.

Bottom line: if you have a 64-Bit OS, run the patcher, it’s a no brainer.
