Hi everyone,

I have just joined this server and need to make a verified post before I can fully join the Discord server but maybe I can receive good here too.

I am just recently started playing SimCity 4 Deluxe again after about an approx 4/5 year break. I play it on Steam. For some reason, for the first ever time, I am now constantly receiving ‘error saving city,’ messages which is stopping me being able to play the game properly.

It lets me save the first couple of times and then just stops working.

I have tried resetting my PC completely and re-downloading Steam and SC. I even deleted all the previous from my Cloud/OneDrive account but it’s done it again.

I have no mods or NAMs involved, never even heard of them until a couple of days ago tbh but would like to try them once I get this issue sorted.

Please share your expertise and help a diehard SC4 fan. I’m a noob when it comes to this type of stuff.

Thanks :)

Do note that the way in which SimCity 4 handles saving seems to cause problems when using internet-based storage. So if your Windows Documents folder is part of OneDrive or similar, that's quite possibly going to be a problem. You can change the location for these files (for SC4), but trust me on this, you really don't want to. So that means ditching OneDrive for Documents or setting it up to ignore the SimCity 4 folder within it.

Otherwise, it could be some overzealous security software not allowing the game access to the files there. If you are using third party Antivirus/Security, then ideally you want to whitelist (mark as trusted) SimCity 4 or it's folders.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

Thanks, I’m going to reset my laptop again and not connect it to OneDrive this time and hopefully that does the trick 👌🏻

Resetting the computer is not the way I'd go about it, ultimately it just requires the right settings so only the folders you want to be synced are part of OneDrive. See the information here, which shows how to control which folders OneDrive syncs, it should be possible to simply un-tick SimCity 4 under Documents and prevent that from being used with OneDrive.

Be careful here, if you stop Syncing MS assume you no longer want the data on your computer. Before doing anything make a copy of the SimCity 4 folder, ideally to an external USB stick or such. In theory the data should remain in the cloud, but I wouldn't want to trust that 100%.

Thanks I followed those instructions and unticked the Documents folder which is where SC4 was saved. I didn’t bother saving SC4 files to a USB stick though because I had already deleted al my previous cities to start afresh as a way to resolve this issue lol. I’m happy to just start over.

Hopefully this works! Next step if all goes well I’m going to install my first NAM 😻

Best of luck, hope that mix’s the problem.

If you are starting out you may find the NAM Lite less complex/overwhelming, so I’d advise you to take a look at that. But if you want all the new networks, the full NAM is really a must have.
