Hi and welcome!

The best way to get a bigger variety of buildings is to download and install custom content, which you can find on the different sections of the STEX (residentials, commercials, industrials, building sets) or using the power search of the LEX.

Keep in mind that getting new buildings can be a relatively slow process, even if becomes a bit addictive at times, specially because at the beginning you'll have to also get and install the dependencies of those buildings. Without them, you'll find many of the dreaded "brown boxes" all over the new lots. I would recommend you to keep the most dependency-heavy buildings for a bit later, and to start with the ones that are more minimalistic in this aspect. In no time, you'll have amassed enough installed dependencies so that most new buildings won't require additional ones.

@gavendano, there is nothing more to add to what Matias said. *;) These links should guide you right to where you want to be.

As you can see, each download section has numerous pages where the various BATs are stored. If I may, I would suggest starting from the first pages and only then work your way down to older files. The reason for this is that contemporary downloads are usually better described in terms of the dependencies needed and as such are easier to operate by the beginner modders.

Older files (and especially the ones from "carboniferous" *;)) may sometimes have missing or obsolete dependencies which makes it time consuming to get them to work. Although the community does the best they can to fish these missing links out, there is never a guarantee that an old file will work just as you would expect.

The "SimCity 4" vanilla Opera House is the most evil thing in existence. Avoid.
