I'm getting it.  I pre-ordered online so I should probably have it tomorrow.  I got Super Mario 64 DS in the mail today.  Just can't play it yet.14.gif

I read this article and have to agree with it:

And no, I'm not getting a DS. Did anyone even know it was being released last sunday? There was almost no hype for its release. A lot of my friends don't even know what a DS even is.

First.  I got it today and I'm lovin it.

Second, he was way off.  If you think it's heavy you must be like 2 years old.  The controls are a little difficult when you first use it but you just have to get used to it.  It only took me about 10 minutes to get good control of it.  I have Super Mario 64 DS, and it is mostly like the original but not the same.  They added about 30 more stars, changed the way you play the game (3 other characters you can control)

Third, there was PLENTY of talk about it.  The last 3 or more weeks there have been TV commercials.  It's been ALL OVER every gaming site along with the Sony PSP.  I even started a thread or two here a while back when it was announced at E3.

I think it looks cool. I always buy Nintendo products, so I will probably ask for it for Christmas or buy it myself.

Plenty of talk, maybe where you are, I only started hearing people talk about it today, and I only saw one ad for it in total. If most of the people I know didn't know it was coming out or didn't know what it was, obviously it didn't reach those people and they didn't do a good enough job advertising it.

Nintendo makes great products! This thing [Nintendo DS] is somewhat comical, though. A touch screen? Sure, it's a great system, although not as practical. I'd like to see Nintendo try something along the lines of the XBox, even the PS2. The Gamecube was little more than a disapointment, although it makes you wonder, are they just buying time for some super-project 10 years in the making? When the PSP comes out, DS will most likely become and afterthought. Unfortunately.

Nintendo is the oldest of the major console companies.

I don't understand how people could like the PSP as a gaming machine.  It's just a portable PS2.  Why not just play your PS2 then?  I like the DS because it gives a new experience you can't get anywhere else.

What do you mean not practical?  Have you even played it?  DS will not become an afterthought.  DS sales are already higher than expected.  EBgames and Gamestop had to stop taking preorders a few weeks ago because they sold out.  It won't be long before the next shipment is sold out also.

Right now the DS game lineup is admittedly not really too great.  I do recommend Super Mario 64 DS.  It is much more than the original.  Lots of mini-games have also been added that can entertain you for hours by themselves.  I'm sure in the upcoming months and by the end of next year we will see many great games that take advantage of the unique capabilities of the DS.  Imagine the games you could play on it that you would never be able to play on a console or GBA.  Games that normally are for the computer, like Simcity, or others that really need a mouse to enjoy, could be put onto the DS.  Rollercoaster Tycoon DS maybe???

As for Xbox and PS2.  There is nothing special about them besides graphics.  Woopee.  The characters are slightly less blocky.  That really makes me buy a game.  21.gif  Nintendo has something special coming next year for it's new console that will supposedly change consoles.  A Revolution.

PSP is cool, you can play thje PS2 anywhere, whie on the Bus, while waiting for someone or whatever. Even though they released a smaller PS2 recently, the PSP will make it even better.

Hopefully, Nintendo will make a really good console next time. If not, it will probably be the end, and we'll be seeing them become mainly developers..8.gif

you can play the DS in the same places.30.gif  And with the PSP you are basically buying the same game twice.  Maybe a couple added things but the same experience on a smaller screen.  The DS is a whole new experience.

i just got a DS for my birthday, and i think that it's, well,

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/images/smilies/36.gif width=20>!FREAKIN AWESOME!

The graphics are good, it's more than i'd expect from a handheld.
The pen feature is great too!
You can communicate with your friends, like a palm pilot, and then you can pop in a cartridge and play a multiplay game, maybe with someone else who's on the bus with you or on the metro.

    GET A DS!

And you made a good choice picking the DS. Have a ducky. 40.gif

Personally, I have been a fan of nintendo since the Nintendo Entertainment System (we sill have one sitting around) but then again I have been limited to Nintendo Systems and this computer. Anyway, I would probabily be put under the loyal nintendo crowd and so far, I am looking foward to hopefully getting the DS for Christmas (thanks corporate america for commericalism) and possibly even looking into the PSP if they don't charge an arm, leg, head, foot, and hand just for a stupid handheld PS1. Anyway, no matter what people are saying, Nintendo has taken it's own path and I am looking foward to it!

I went to WEM the other day and saw one of their promotion stands. Tried it, it is very cool. It is a totally different style of play than the GBA.

You said many things in this topic about Nintendo and the other console producing companies... I agree with some and disagree with others... just a matter of opinion. However, saying the Xbox and the PS2 have just about 2 good games each is just absurd!

I'm a big fan of Nintendo and it's games... an old one, since I owned the NES and the original GameBoy. Nowadays I have the Xbox and the GameCube... and the Xbox has got more good games, imho. As for the PS2, it's known fact that it's huge choice of games makes up for it's relatively poor graphics for today's standards. So, I think you've gone a bit too far this time.

Oh , just to keep on the topic... I won't be getting me a DS. I need to keep in touch with real life now and then, and a portable videogame wouldn't help. I already spend 90% of the time I'm home playing... when I leave I wanna do something else.

PS: the Gamecube has a better controller than the other two main consoles, I give you that.

Exactly.  The only game I would get for Xbox would be Fable (heard its good) and for PS2, GTA and Final Fantasy games.  All other types of games I play I can also find for GameCube or at least an equivalent of it.  I'm really not into shooter games (except I would like to try GTA).  That's basically about all what PS2 and Xbox have over GameCube (and maybe realistic racing games that I also don't play).  Anything else you can find the same or equivalent for on GameCube (or better).

and about the DS i saw a movie and it looks pretty nice
i think i might get one, but i'll wait a little to get
    a better price

I saw some kid walking fast in between classes (there was about 1 minute left in between the passing period) playing a game on his DS, and since I was right outside the door to my class, I pulled him aside to look at the game. I was blown away by the graphics on that puppy.  My Nintendo 64 doesn't even have graphics that good.  Even though he was late for class, I still think it was worth it.

I would get me one of those for Christmas, but I've already found out that I'm getting a ton of XBox games, and I would like to try to have somewhat of a life next year.

It costs $150 US.  But when the PSP comes out, the price will probably drop.  That should be around March I think.

I'm too sleepy to get into a huge debate about PSP and DS.

All I want to say now is that I am a huge fan of Nintendo. While
I often never miss the release date for a product, I have to make
an exception for the DS. As much as I want it, I think I can honestly
wait about another few months until the price drops. The game libarary
is small and you never know when they might adjust it. (Take a look at
the example of the SP, it came out 2 years after the Advance to fix
small technical issues such as lighting and other improvements.) I
want to wait a good 6 months before I pick one up. I'm not saying
that its going to be bad when the PSP releases along side it. In fact
I may pick up a DS about the time the PSP comes out to just add my
statistic that the DS is still holding a strong sales record.[by March]

I wish I had one right now, but I am going to wait for a number of
    personal reasons and logical reasons.

Now that Christmas has passed, did anyone else get one?

And I have good news.  Team Xlink almost has the DS tunneled!  That means that you will be able to play your multiplayer games against people all over the world as long as you are near a compatible wireless router! Although the Team Xlink project will be a moot point once Demasked is ready (supposedly around March).

I almost really wanted the Nintendo DS for Christmas... I almost asked for it until I walked down to Wal Mart and actually tried it out, I thought it was really pretty lame 11.gif
2 screens? Are you going to look at the bottom screen with your right eye and the top screen with your left eye? It seems kinda silly to me

Oh yeah that's possible too... my fault 5.gif
I did notice a couple things about the DS that could and should be changed, though.
I think the screens on the DS are way too small 11.gif. If we were to stretch out the speakers vertically and change the 4 button arangement from this:
                                                                                      o
                                                                                   o     o
    to this: o                                                                      o
               o
               o
               o

Both screens could be widened if those 2 things were done, couldn't they?

Each donation helps keep Simtropolis online, open and free!

Thank you for reading and enjoy the site!
