Landfill without road connection?

I know dumps need road access to gather the trash - but do the roads need to be connected to the main city to work? Like could I have an island with a dump but not road access to the rest of the city - and would the dump still work?

Yes, but with a caveat.

On your island you'll need at least one growable grown. It can be R, C, or I, but there must be one that is connected to the landfill. If it's residential tho, you need a farm, industry, commercial, or ploppable with jobs for those Sims to work at. Personally, I often make it its own self contained little town.

In this case, mines off in the middle of a forest, but an island will work just as well:

And yes, then garbage from all over your city tile will make it to the landfill and you benefit too by not having garbage trucks running around your main areas.

Yep. And the same thing will work perfectly well on said island. Grow R, C, or I touching the same street or road that connects to the landfill and it will magically gather trash from the entire city tile even tho it is not connected to the main city at all.

Try it. *:P

You could also deal your garbage to an adjoining tile. With a little creative terrain-ing, of, say a land bridge, you could cleverly disguise it as an island.

What I have actually done...one of my adjoining tiles is the dump for the surrounding cities...it isn't an actual island, just a part of land on the other side of a river.

That will still work fine following the method I described and it need not connect to anything on the main side of the river.

Good stuff to know, though I wonder how often your little village burns from riots?  I can't imagine those peeps like living in the dump and the mayor rating has to be abysmal...

R$ Sims don't mind the dump at all. It's not a negative to them. And in my imagination, they love going there to dig out treasures. *

Sometimes they even create statues of me nearby:
