Game crashes when trying to open a city tile

I have a new computer running windows 10.  I purchased SimCity 4 deluxe edition from Steam.  I open the game in Steam.  I watched the You Tube Video on “8 essential, mods, tools and fixes”.

 I downloaded:

#1 Network Addon Mod (NAM) + 4GB Patch,

#2 SC4 Fix,

#6 I-HT Fix,

 #7 Opera House Fix

And Copied this into my Steam Launch Options: -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -intro:off -CPUCount:1

Things I did not download:

I have a launcher to extract and I “save” only as suggested, and #8 BSC Functional Seaports is too difficult so I didn’t download that.

I placed all the downloads in my Simcity4/ plugin folder (1,2,6,7).

It opens fine and lets me go to my regions fine.  When I click on a city (tile) the hour glass comes up and after a short period of time the game just closes.

I noticed I have a lot more items in my SC4 file and my plugins file.  It may be one of those items causing the trouble.   I don’t know enough to know what I can and can’t take out so I was hoping you could help with this.

Phyllis

Thanks

Hi @PVK

Hopefully, we can get you set up here.

The first question would be to ask if you ran the 4gb_patch after downloading the NAM. This will set the game's .exe file to be able to run the newer and larger versions of NAM. The crashing when entering a city is the usual symptom of not having the patch applied.

The second thing would be a suggestion on the Plugins folder organization. Looking at your image of your Plugins folder, it kind of looks like you unzipped the NAM into your Plugins folder. Not sure if it has anything to do with the crashing issue (probably not) , but there are some organizational suggestions that might help when adding things to the plugins later. The only files that need to be in the plugins folder are those the game actually uses (Model, Desc, and Lot files). Several of those files that were included in the NAM could be moved out of the plugins. From your image and the list of items you mentioned, the Network Addon Mod, the 22-Old City Times Building, the SC4Fix.dll, and the Opera House Fix items would be the only things that need to be in the Plugins folder. The remaining items can be stored outside the Plugins. Some will also recommend that the SC4Fix.dll file can be in the Program Files/Maxis/SC4 Deluxe/Plugins folder.

With that said, the key thing with the crashes after installing NAM is the 4gb_patch. That would probably be the first thing to check. Here is a video made by @rsc204 that shows the way to install NAM (Link). The patch portion starts at about the 3:50 mark.

FYI: Please also be aware that some files come in the .dat format too. This is a way of condensing the three filetypes that CaptCity mentioned into one file, generally used to make plugin management easier. Having any other types of file in the plugins folder will actually slow the loading process, as the game has to parse through files that will then be discarded.

There is also evidence that the game loads a few larger files far faster than it will load many small files totalling to the same size. This is where more advanced users will employ the DatPacker to compress their plugin folders into a few larger files for faster loading. Generally only used once you're happy with your plugin folder and now want to play.

    Hi Whte_rbt and CaptCity

You were correct the 4gb patch was not applied.  The game now opens perfectly.  Thank you!

I am reading the Readme first document and I am watching the NAM 37 & Higher Installer Guide to get my addons to work.   I have lots to learn.

    Thanks
