First Time with NAM Railway features – Am I doing this right?

I just started using rail viaducts from the Rail Puzzle Pieces of the NAM36, for the very first time.  I never had so much fun with SimCity 4 rail, as I am tonight!

I'm laying out all the RRW heavy rail for an entire large city tile ... as you do.  I'm doing it during the same city planning stage that I do all my RHW-4 interchanges.  Having a great time, but there's a niggling fear in me ... am I doing this right?  What if I've missed something vital, and it won't work ... will I have to scrap my entire network and start all over again?  >.<

Can someone please check this screenshot, and tell me if I've screwed up?

  1. Is the ground level rail (T) I've laid down quite compatible with all the viaduct rail?
  2. Have I done my rail x highway overpasses right?
  3. Will the Maxis vanilla passenger station there work with the two diagonal rail lines that touch it's corners?
  4. Front entrance via highway bus stop and pedmall, back entrance via street for car parking.

Thank you!

This all looks fine to me, generally speaking, there is no reason to suspect any problems when everything lines up right. If you want to check, wait for sims to start using the rail, that's pretty conclusive. Otherwise, if you've the Extra Cheats plugin, use the command Drawpaths to see the Rail paths, if these are unbroken, again everything is in order.

Just to clarify, the puzzle-based rail network has been a feature of the NAM for a long time. It was the newer draggable variants that debuted with NAM 36. Functionally they do the same thing, just the newer ones are easier to build. Right now support is a bit mixed, so whilst the draggable ERRW will do some things the Puzzle pieces won't, notably L1 support. There are some situations, diagonal crossings especially, where only the puzzle-based Viaduct Rail will work. You can mix the two, at least at L2, but in-time the draggable variant will likely be the only one you need.

Absolutely, as you've no doubt realised, RHW is only supported for OxO crossings. But all 4 Ortho/Diag variants are supported with Maxis Highway - or the MHO, which I highly recommend you try looking at some of your screenshots.

Not certain what you mean by the T here. But I don't see anything wrong with your setup.

It should work for any rail line that touches the lot, so yes.

Again it should, since the lot touches a suitable network. The Pedmall here is important, since sims won't travel between two touching stations or TE lots.

  • Thanks 1

Head over to my Lot and Mod Shack to keep abreast of my latest developments.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

New to the NAM? Check out my tutorials on YouTube. Latest upload: How to: RHW - MHO Roundabout Interchanges. (Nov 25).

p.s. - I'm MGB over on SC4D and a member of the NAM team.

    Thank you, @rsc204!

I didn't think to try  drawpaths on  for rail, that's a help!

I do lots of planning of networks when I start a city tile, and my Brownsville, New York is a large city tile (so EVEN MORE planning than usual) with 4 highway Neighbour Connections, and 8 heavy rail Neighbour Connections, and so it's really very helpful to know that what I'm doing should work.

I'm actually really impressed with how intuitive the Rail Puzzle Pieces are.  I found that laying the ground level track (SimCity 4 vanilla hotkey T), the Rail over Blank Terrain puzzle pieces knew to follow that track and turn it into a viaduct.  I didn't realise it was L2, which helps explain how it has model train nostalgia written all over it!  Thanks for the tip about ERRW ... I hadn't realised what that was until you mentioned it.  I'll have to play with that in my sandbox, too.  *

Cori edit: This is a bit off topic so I've placed it in a spoiler box:

    Spoiler

Today, plunched myself into the NAM 36 install issue´s. Apparently, once I had a trouble free NAM 36 install as I updated a copÿ of my ANNO Europe to this version with RAM as the rail mod. Experimenting with a empty instalation I observed that the installer completly removes a just excecuted install, knowliedge able I made a backup of this working NAM 36 afther the first install and restored these. Furthur I discoverd that there where only FLEX ramps available in NAM 36 not 35, wich doesn´t have the network cut option with the french dragable bridge issue, why is this type present. Last I noticed that the RAM an RRW dragable rail pieces in the last install apeard draging brown line end afther showing nothing ? My working NAM 36 doesn´t have this issue, so installing one way or the other something wrong ! As I am using UserDir where to put the NAM files I never experienced these problems up to know. NAM 35 probably may have the same installation issue, so I backup that aswell, but customization and those weird instalation issue´s removing older installs, I know that NAM install somewhere stores the last used configuration but if you choose a custom install and location why does it bother with previous installations ! Ibecome very frustrated with these latest NAM versions issues !

All standard RRW pieces show normal, dragable RRW and RAM afhter seemles install show at dragable stage a brown color and are aftheward invisible for the eye, back bridge is OK, but the normal rail no textures nothing of the dragable rail ?

And there is a reply for it in this thread where this post is duplicated.
