Hello guys,

I need your help. I want to create Train Rear light on my train.

But I do not know exactly how.

I know about tow ways:

1/ Vehicle Effects and Advanced vehice effects.

2/ Additve shader and sub-meshes.

The  1/    way is somehow not working for me.   At least when I am in asset editor and click on vehicle efects button there is nothing like Train Rear Light :(  I see there only Train DItch ight and Train Center/Right/Left Light.    So I tried to do it via XML :

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<VehicleEffectsDefinition>
  <Vehicles>
	<Vehicle name="jovzin_ice3_train_Data">
		  <Effects>
			<Effect name="Vehicle Effect Wrapper" base="Train Rear Light" fallback="None">>
			  <Position x="-0.45" y="1.9" z="-0.9" />
			  <Direction z="1" />
			  <RequiredFlags>Reversed</RequiredFlags>
			</Effect>
			<Effect name="Vehicle Effect Wrapper" base="Train Rear Light" fallback="None">
			  <Position x="0.45" y="1.9" z="-0.9" />
			  <Direction z="1" />
			  <RequiredFlags>Reversed</RequiredFlags>
			</Effect>
		  </Effects>
		</Vehicle>
		<Vehicle name="trailerjovzin_ice3_train5">
		  <Effects>
			<Effect name="Vehicle Effect Wrapper" base="Train Rear Light" fallback="None">>
			  <Position x="-0.45" y="1.9" z="-0.9" />
			  <Direction z="1" />
			  <ForbiddenFlags>Reversed</ForbiddenFlags>
			</Effect>
			<Effect name="Vehicle Effect Wrapper" base="Train Rear Light" fallback="None">
			  <Position x="0.45" y="1.9" z="-0.9" />
			  <Direction z="1" />
			  <ForbiddenFlags>Reversed</ForbiddenFlags>
			</Effect>
		  </Effects>
		</Vehicle>
  </Vehicles>
</VehicleEffectsDefinition>

But still in the asset editor there is nothing. Even the tab where effect is written there is blank space after I put there this XML code.

So I really do not know what to do ?   Btw one more thing. REV0 mentioned something about first  need to put the asset to workshop to get the steam workshop ID and than make the XML ?  IT will not work in my asset folder in the My Documents/Collosal Order/Cities Skylines/Addons/Assets    ?  Currently the xml and crp files are here not on workshop.

The 2/ way    what I do not understand is this sub-meshes. How to do the rear light via sub-meshes ?  In my understanding the sub-meshes should be something like Lod0  , Lod1 , Lod2 etc etc.  So I need to create some lopwer poly count model of the end trailer with lights in Maya or ?

Thank you very much for your help.

Sorry I'm about a month late, haven't checked the forum in quite a while. Anyway, the reason that the effect you need isn't showing is because it's part of the Extra Vehicle Effects pack and that doesn't get loaded in the editor. Small oversight on my part when adding the editor functionality. Until it's fixed a workaround would be to use any other light effect to place it in the editor and then manually replacing the name in the xml file later.

The part of uploading an asset to the workshop before doing the effects is because the game renames assets the moment you upload them to include a workshop number. This means that the effect file created with your local version doesn't work when it's uploaded because the asset name in there no longer matches the actual asset it's now combined with on the workshop. And the easiest way to deal with this is to upload the asset first (set it to private if you want so nobody can sub to it while you're still working on it), then subscribe and load it in the editor. Then add your effects and update the workshop item to include the new xml file.

Submeshes I don't have any experience with so not much help there I'm afraid.

I'll also add my own experience with submeshes, as I badly want ICE3 gets released:

Submesh function allows to add extra meshes on vehicle that will get triggered/visible on specific occasions. Despite the potential use, submesh is still crippled for vehicles as we get only 1 function of submesh that is reverse/forward. Submesh function is also not available for other cars but locomotive only.

Combined with Additive Shader mod, you can, in theory create rear lights as a separate mesh (simple face that will overlay actual lights on the base mesh - the vehicle) and lights' appereance will get triggered when train goes to reverse/forward motion. Combined with additive shader I think you can get a nice result on rear lights.

It may look like a bit complex on first time but it's not rocket science.

Start working on end-engine/car (yes, you will not use 'replace last car with engine option, it has to be ''new'' car). In order to do that you need to use Engine template on editor to get submesh tab on editor. Once you're there, add your submesh (that is rear lights, modeled separately). Set it to be triggered on forbidden reverse, so it will be appear on forward motion only.

Then use modtools to set spawning procedural in order to use it as a car. If you want to use additive shader here, run the script made by ronyx to use additive shader on vehicle. Save the asset.

Then reload the same template, this time make your actual train set. Add the end car you just made as last car. Go back to your first car, add your rear light submesh, this time set it as reverse only. (not forbidden) Save.

If you wish to go down that path, I can provide more information or work on them myself, however you wish. (In any case you have me on Steam for inquiries)
