What operating system are you using? If it's Vista, Win 7, Win 8x, or Win 10 then the disc version of the game will not work because Microsloth disabled the DRM check to see if the CD is in the drive.

oh wow ok, i have win 10

Well, super phooey. If it was 8x or less I was going to point you to a workaround. With 10 it's still possible but beyond my ability (and not a safe thing to do anyhow if your comp is connected to the net).

If you can buy the digital version then the one from Gog is the absolute best to get. But wait till it goes on sale for $4.99. They do that about twice per year.

If you mean the one that came out in 2013 then I'd personally say: No!

But, there are a few peeps somewhere on the planet who like that version. There's nothing inherently wrong with it, but it's completely dumbed down. Many peeps say it's fun for a few days and then they don't go back to it. Now, that's not everyone ofc. With SimCity 4 there are peeps who've been playing all 15 years since it was released.

If your comp has plenty of oomph, you could also consider Cities: Skylines. That one is still popular and we have a fairly active forum for it.

Oh, one follow up piece of advice: Do not buy the digital version from Origin. They are selling one that does not have the update patches in it and it cannot be patched. That would prevent you from using nearly all of the custom content here on the STEX and over on Devotion's LEX.

You should consider getting either the Steam or GOG version of SimCity 4.

Yep. The Steam version is good too. (I prefer GoG myself cause it doesn't add any hoops to jump thru. And you don't need their Galaxy thinger for SC4 even if GoG suggests it.)

Alternatively, if you can set up an earlier version of Windoze to boot into when you want to play (or an emulator), then you might avoid Win-10 problems that way.

You might check with the Linux folks to see how they run in an emulator (I think it's called Wine). Having a Linux partition can be useful on other occasions, thus justifying the effort of making one if you don't have one already.
