So I had a catastrophic hard drive failure over a week ago. I'm back up and running with a new drive and a fresh install of Windows, but I lost everything. Has anyone else had to start over? What do I do? How do I get my subbed assets back without going through every asset in the workshop?

Also, longshot question. Has anyone else had any problems with 32 gigs of RAM? My computer is acting weird with 32, like the performance is actually worse and less stable than it was with 24. I have Windows 7 Pro, so it can handle 32, and my motherboard is supposed to be able to handle it just fine.

Anyway, thanks in advance.

Yes, I have had to start over a few times, fortunately, I found some backups from before my last time I had to start over.

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

Your subscriptions are tied to your Steam account, so the game should download everything you had automatically once you've re-installed the game. Local/private assets and resources, config files and mod settings will all be lost however.

An incident like you experienced (sorry about that, btw :( ) is the reason why every once in while I make a back-up of the entire C:SL folder in App_Data (basically all my local stuff) as well as all the mod config/settings files in the game's main folder. Assets and mods will be re-downloaded automatically, but local content and mod data are lost forever without a back-up.

    Thanks.

As always happens, I'd been intending to do just that. I kept thinking I need to make a backup of my local files, but I never did. My city wasn't all I lost. Luckily I had a fairly recent backup of my other work. There were a lot of other files and stuff I didn't get backed up though.

I haven't given up entirely on the drive yet. I'm going to seek some help in recovering the files. I'm not holding my breath, but I have maybe 5% hope I could access the drive again and pull what's left.

I wondered about the subbed assets. Is there any way to control that? I'm not crazy about the idea of it blasting hundreds of subbed assets onto my drive all at once. Plus I was thinking of taking the opportunity to do some spring cleaning of my subbed assets while I'm at it. Is there any way to do that?

    Thanks again.

I'm not sure what harm "blasting hundreds of subbed assets" could do, because it's nothing more than a whole lot of small, separate downloads (bread 'n' butter stuff for everything with more computing power than a toaster oven). If you want to clean out your collection, I'd do that before you install the game (it will download your subscriptions automatically once the setup is completed) - just go to that atrocious Subscription overview page in Steam and plough the those dozens, if not hundreds of pages of subscription - no easier way of doing it, unfortunately.

Also you can use the fantastic loading-screen mod to get a list of assets used in the current map.

Afaik. that mod is broken since Natural Disasters was released. Or has it been fixed by now? I really miss that mod, it had so many useful features.

EDIT: Tried it and it freezes on loading. :/

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I appreciate it. I'll check out the sub page and see if I can cull through all my subs.

On a side note, is there a list anywhere of the mods broken by Natural Disasters?

Anyone happen to have a local copy of an asset called 'John Player & Sons' saved somewhere?

It got removed from Steam a while back. I had a local copy saved myself, but with my drive crash, I lost it. So if anyone has it, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The picture at the top of that list is really something. Is that from your Seattle build?

Yes it is.  Gives inspiration to people when they sub and be like "Whoa, I can build this with mods?!?"

The thumbnail is a different story with the image of the LOD toggler with the trollface with the PC on fire.  Subbing to all these mods does have its consequences...

EDIT: I almost forgot all the support mods/buildings required for MOM, I had to throw those in there as essential equipment.

I just subbed the MOM mods, but haven't had a chance to load up a city and put them to use. It sounds very interesting. It's essentially what I've wanted to see since the beginning.
