After 33 years of not having American naval vessels visit New Zealand the USS Sampson was due to enter Auckland Harbour tomorrow morning for the International Naval Review as part of celebrations for the 75th anniversary of the Royal New Zealand Navy, it won't be taking part now instead its bypassing Auckland and is heading straight to Kaikoura to help with the disaster relief.

EDIT: In another news article the HMAS Darwin was also going to be taking part in the same Naval Review buts its been diverted to help with disaster relief and Canada is sending its frigate the HMCS Vancouver to help.

A ship from Singapore is now helping and along with evacuating people the ships will be taking people's pets

The four ships (America, Australia, Canada and New Zealand) have now evacuated 900 people, 1 cat, 17 dogs and 1 box containing 30000 bees (plus 9.3 tonnes of baggage) and delivered 250 tonnes of emergency supplies to those people who are staying behind.

Things are settling down here, the ships have gone home and the Army has now opened up access to the worse effected areas and is running supply convoys to them.
