Cities: Skylines on Macbooks

Hello everyone!

I intend to buy a new macbook but I wanted it to play Cities: Skylines really well. So I have a few questions:

What macbook models run Cities Skylines?

The ones that do run the game, do they run it as well as PCs/is the game playable as in any other PC?

If PCs run the game better, is the game still playable in macbooks and what are the limitations?

Are the limitations so big that justify me getting a PC instead of a mac?

Cheers!

Save yourself a lot of money and buy a PC. $ for $ (or whatever currency you use), a PC will pack at least twice the performance of a mac. So unless you like giving money to Apple's shareholders, or just can't stand something so utilitarian as a PC without an apple upon it, it's just the only logical choice IMO.

Long since past are the days where Macs excelled at anything the PC did, such as DTP, Graphics or Audio. A Mac today is just a re-branded PC, and boy do you pay for the mark-up. I'd go and take a look at the Alienware or similar gaming-orientated laptops, because if you want to play games, it's all about the GPU and getting every ounce of power you can. That said, if you really don't need to play on the go, spend a little on a decent tablet, use that out and about. Buy yourself a serious gaming rig instead, this will be even cheaper, even more powerful and even more reliable in the long term. Hint, laptops have serious overheating problems, since there is so little space to dissipate it, running them hot will always reduce their lifespan, however well built they are (which usually they are not).

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

    Thanks for the reply.

The problem is that I am not a gamer, the only game I want to play is cities: skylines.  And I need mac OSX for my daily life and work purposes. So I really only have two choices: 1) buy a MacBook and play the game in it even if not with a perfect performance or 2) buy a MacBook and then also buy a PC laptop to play the same on the side (doesn't sound like a very smart choice).

In that sense, I am more looking for information about the limitations of playing the game on Mac OS and how to minimize them (by choosing the right model of MacBook etc) than I am interested in being convinced to buy a PC because it's better for the game (I already knew it was).

Well then, the answer is really simple, buy the most expensive one you can with the best graphics card inside it. (actually, looks like that might be a problem).

If you must have a Mac for whatever reason, they simply are very, very expensive. Now if you take a bottom of the line Mac, unless you are using some seriously resource-hungry software, that would probably be sufficient for your needs in terms of work. Without spending hours looking at price lists, I'd be willing to bet you'd get a better spec PC in addition to said MacBook, for less than the cost of buying the super-duper top of the range MacBook.

For example, this base model MacBook costs around $1,000 on Amazon. A top of the range model is $2,800, but still doesn't have a dedicated GPU inside! o.O  So you can forget playing Skylines on it well. That's almost $3,000 dollars for an out of date 6th Gen i7 computer (everyone else is selling 7th gen in their new models, except Apple). For that $1,800 difference, you could buy yourself a very nice i7 PC (more powerful than the top of the range Mac would be), with a seriously good mid-high end GPU.

Proving my point, here for $1,500 is a much better ASUS model, with a decent NVidia GPU and higher res screen. So, madness it may seem, but two computers is going to be both cheaper and better for you. Bear in mind, I didn't even spend 5 minutes looking for a better deal yet!! Not to mention, ignore buying a second laptop, think about a proper desktop PC instead and you can shave even more money off that price. Desktop PCs are so much better for playing games with, you know, the right tool for the job. In addition, it can be upgraded if need be, plus the parts are replaceable if one breaks. Whereas with a laptop, if a part breaks, you might as well bin it.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on Apple's range, I won't buy their products, that top end model would represent three months wages to me. Or put another way, twice what I paid for my 10 year old Jaguar S-Type 5 years ago. But I do know what computers cost and I simply can not understand how that specification can be worth anything like the $2,800 asking price. But it's your money, I'm not telling you what to do, just trying to enlighten you.
