I had recently downloaded the flora tree add-ons such as seasonal trees and pacific northwestern trees.  Every once and a while a lot (usually residential) will build and have a brown box in the lawn named "noble fir tree"... Is this a default tree that the game is trying to put in there? What am I missing?

What's the tree mods name you are using? You're clearly missing the tree model here and you need to look into the mods readme file and the dependencies there. I've got to admit the in very few cases the readme isn't acurate and missing some requirements. But maybe not in this case. :D

Kind regards!

The only way a brown box could appear was if that tree was being overridden by a mod, but the model associated with said override was missing. Because Maxis lots by default use the trees included with the game.

This suggests that you have installed a Maxis Tree Replacer mod, the missing model would be a dependency of that mod. Without knowing which tree replacer you have installed, it's hard to elaborate. But Brown Boxes always = Missing Dependencies. So check the documentation/download info for the tree replacer, and double check all the listed dependencies.

Thanks for the help you guys. Ive been playing simcity since it came out 13 years ago. Have always loved it. But I recently started getting into all these mods so I am kinda new to it all.

So can you rename a file you download? A lot of these files have complicated names. That wouldnt mess anything up would it?

I guess I better start digging and looking to see if im missing a dependency.

Update: I deleted all Sayonara files and dependencies and reinstalled them: everything works!!! Only took me a few hours lol...

I mustve missed something somewhere down the line.  These mods are nice, but damn... it can be like a tower of jenga blocks. Dont want to remove one thing and have it cause a chain reaction on other mods.

Thanks again for the help, sorry Im sure you guys dont like to deal with the noobs haha. But I appreciate it. Time to play!

The file names you see in Windows do not affect the game in any way, except for the order they load in. Behind the scenes, each item used in these files must have an ID, it's those ID's that SC4 uses to find/reference the objects. So whilst you can rename any files you like, bear in mind, that can make life difficult if you need to cross-reference them against the original names later.

Most mods play very nicely together, the complications often come from mods that alter existing mods. In the case of this mod, I suspect your troubles might be down to out of date dependencies. I know a number of the trees it uses are in updated packs, where if you had an older version of that package, the ID's/contents might have been different.

The LEX has a neat feature, the dependency tracker. It knows which files you've downloaded, it also knows if they are up to date too. Sadly there is no such tool here on the STEX, but it can be worth checking if you run into troubles (assuming you have a SC4D account, since Girafe's trees are LEX exclusives).
