Start learning with GMAX or 3ds max?

Hi,

I am wondering if there is advice for eager new BATers. Is it worth starting and trying to learn GMAX with the Maxis LE/PIM or would it be better just to start with 3ds Max and the PIMX? (Assuming one could get 3ds Max for free). I know the GMAX is somewhat more simpler, but it is also out dated, and I also know PIMX is considered a better version of LE/PIM. GMAX/BAT is also a bit of a pain to install since it isn't compatible with the Origin version, so maybe it's just easier to start with 3ds Max and PIMX. Any thoughts?

Whilst 3DS Max is a superior program to gMax, it's also vastly more complicated. I'd recommend starting out with SC4BAT under gMax, at least until you work out whether this is something you want to invest a large amount of time into. Also, you should be aware, even if you use 3DS max or another program for 3D modelling, gMax/SC4BAT is required to make the LODs of your model. So you can't simply bypass them entirely.

One of the nice things about 3DS max, it's just a more feature packed version of gMax. Despite the age, the main interface is remarkably similar. If you are just looking to make a few basic buildings, you won't be missing out on much not having 3DS max. If you get into this seriously, then you'll probably want to move over. Since 3DS max is capable of far better quality models than gMax. But most of what you learn is transferable so you won't feel like you've wasted your time.

The Maxis tools for the LE and PIM are something I'd avoid though. You are simply better off with PIM-X and learning how to use one tool. Anything you create will likely be better modded for using it to, since it takes a lot of the complication out of creating new lots.

Do you like custom textures, but don't like all the work involved creating them?, take a look at the Texture Automation options here. Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.

Thank you! That seems like a very reasonable approach. Good to know the interface is similar between GMAX and 3ds max. I'll start working with PIM-X too! Hopefully I'll be able to share something of good quality and useful in the coming months.

It is a touch and go and possible a matter of opnion. 3DS MAX is vaistly superior, but GMAX is simpler and with some nice tutorial, it may be easier to learn the ropes with GMAX. I started with GMAX and I think it was a right decision. But the main thing is what @rsc204 said, you can apply the skills your learned with GMAX straight to the 3DS MAX. So learning with GMAX is not time wasted. One problem with 3DS MAX is that it is increasintly difficult to find an older version (2012 or older) which would work without extra effort with BAT4MAX scribt.

I actually use all, Maxis PIM and LE and PIMX. PIMX is better, and it is the best for general building stat and lot creation, but there are few things that it can't do. For example I need Maxis PIM for custom building foundation and LE if I want to change the size of the lot or switch the building. Also for example sometimes both PIM and PIMX give really high garbage values for a big commercial building and I need iLivesReader if I want to change some particular building stat. And I need iLivesReader or SC4Tool if I want to adjust lot's density level. Annoying. I wish there would be one do-it-all editor. :) But PIMX is my first stop and I use others only if I can't do what I want with PIMX.

Find a good tutorial. I recommend starting with the official gMax one on the Turbo Squid webstie. This will get you familiar with the basics and is very well written.

After that, BAT essentials part 1-4 on the omnibus.
