No Pillars lets you place segments without pillars, but it does more.

Side Pillars: With "No Pillars" there is an option for Side Pillars.  It uses the railroad iron pillars that support from the side, not the center-line concrete pillars.  This lets you place a same-width or narrower road under your elevated road.

Center PIllars: if the lower road is an avenue type road with a decorative center strip, a normal elevated road placed in Overlay mode will have pillars centered in the center - and thus will not block most traffic.

Alternative Supports: There are several separate diagonal pillar, side support, or cantilever assets for overpasses and such.  Place the elevated road with No Pillars, and then add the supports under the roadbed.  This technique is also used to place some nice bridge assets.

Alternatively, you can use a number of pillar assets created by Duck Clogs - you can place these next to roads, and add pillar-less roads on top of them to create a multi-layer road system. I haven't used them myself, so I can't tell how well they work or whether the fact that they are grouped under Electricity has any drawbacks, but I've seen some screenshots of people using them, and the end-result does look pretty damn good. So maybe worth checking out.

Those are the "alternative pillars" i was thinking of - thanks for finding them!

I am one of those people that has extensively tested out Duck Clogs pillars with conjunction with multi-level highways.  I have had the chance to use them in challenging terrain like in this example.  Older versions of Duck Clog's pillars would 'float' above uneven terrain, but it seems since After Dark that they can be raised via terrain modification, hence the darker grey below the lighter grey.  The only limitation of the pillars is strictly to double-decks from ground to 1-level.
