Brown boxes are a result of missing model files. Usually a custom lot will require some additional files, such as prop or texture packs. These are called "dependencies", as the lot depends on them to work correctly. Without these files in your plugins folder, the brown box will show in their place.

So to remove them, you'll need to download & install the dependencies for the lots. This info is usually provided in an upload's description, or within the readme documentation. If you'd like specific help finding these, we're all here to assist. :)

you can download a mod that will change the boxes to a coloured smudge, you can also add this to your SimCity 4 command lines options

-IgnoreMissingModelDataBugs:on/off

Off (default) shows all missing models as brown boxes.

On just doesn't show anything for them at all

but as Cyclone Boom says if you want to get rid of them properly then you have to download the dependencies

Right click on your shortcut that starts the game.  If you have a standard installation, select Properties.  You should get a page with a text box labelled Target.  This is your command line.  The first thing in the Target box should be the complete pathname of the game in quotation marks.  The quotes are there because there is a space in the file name.

To add options leave one space after the final quote and add your option (must be spelled exactly right).  Each option must be treated as a word and separated from all others by either a space or a tab character.

If you got your game from Steam or Origin, you might have to pursue a different method.

Here is a comprehensive list of all options for the command line: https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=3683.msg113280#msg113280

I strongly suggest you search out any missing dependencies.  Your lots will look odd without the associated props and textures.  There are two plugins that are considered default by most lot builders and often not mentioned.  These are BldgProps_Vol1 and BldgProps_Vol2.  if you don't have them they are on the Lot Editor page at SC4Devotion.

FYI here is my command line:

"C:/Program Files/Maxis/SimCity 4 Deluxe/Apps/SimCity 4.exe"  -intro:off -CustomResolution:enabled -r1920x1080x32 -d:directx  -CPUCount:1 -f

Which reads:

program to start

turn off the EA games movie

Set resolution for my 1080p screen (takes two options)

Use directx rendering

Use only 1 core (processor)

full screen
