Yeah, if only it was this easy. I tried that, but still I can't import it. However, I also found out it works fine at a scale of 0.5 and below. So for the moment I can't model any buildings taller than 400 meters -.-

    Great work!

Just for the record, how tall are the buildings in the Vanilla game? It seems the tallest I've found is the special building "High Interest Tower", but I've got no idea how many metres tall it is. Looks like between 100 and 250, but it's hard to judge. At any rate I miss some standout monument towers that would dominate the skyline from afar, so I'd like to try some of yours some day.

I think I saw a building that was basically just a sort of tape measure, so you can measure buildings. I can't seem to find it anymore though.

    edit:

found it, this guy has a 100, 500 and 1000m ruler in his workshop:

I don't really know about other categories, but the level 5 high residential are around 90 meters, the level 4 are around 50

Without measuring it, I'd say High Interest Tower is about 150 meters tall, I'd call it "your average european highrise building". Sadly the game is not shipped with any growable highrises (true highrises, >= 100m; <200m) and no ploppable skyscrapers.

Btw, I've seen quite a lot of people complaining about (my) scale 1:1 skyscrapers and supertalls, they call it "way too tall", "out of scale" and more. These are exactly the people who have literally no idea how tall even a 200m building actually is. They take the 20 floor high growable buildings for skyscrapers, not realizing these buildings don't even classify as highrises.

I agree on that, 100m is not even a real highriser. But I will avoid going too high with growables (for me 120/130 will be a max I think) because they will become disproportionate (comparatively) and there will be nothing between level 4 and 5. If only we had more levels... and bigger lots for growables  :meh:

Yeah and we need bigger zones for farming too. I think that's a point where SimCity is better, but only one of a few. There are way more points where CSL is better.

You make beautiful buildings BTW! Great work!

And that's a point where Cities XL shines !!!

Guys I was wondering if some of you are generally interested in historical buildings, primarily churches. There are some pretty beautiful ones in my home city so it's rather easy for me to model them.

For example, the largest romanesque cathedral in the world:

Looks beautiful! More churches would be nice in the game. Maybe also some smaller churches? Like this one:

Good to hear. I might start with Trinity Church then. Just need to find some spare time to visit and take detail shots. I'm planning to make some highly detailed models first, that will take a while especially since it's a baroque building :D

Edit: You can also search on google for churches in Speyer and ask me to model your favourites. I will not do all of them, at least not in a row. More like over the next years if the C:S hype continues :)

I like German churches and I like your buildings. This combination can't fail!

Okay guys, a little status update. I've been quite busy last week and had no time to model at all, but now I'm back! Let's start with some bad news - I will postpone the Petronas Towers a bit.

Then, the good news: I will work on a simple, growable filler to close the gap between GSB tower and the default buildings in the game :)

    Level 3 office, circa 107m, 4x4

    Massing test:

It will be heavily based on TaunusTurm, a 170m highrise in Frankfurt:

I could also make a ploppable version on request.

Works on the first church will start within a week, too!

    Thank you, very true :D

Facade detail - I wish I could get all these fine lines (between the panels) and details into the game, but that seems impossible.

Very nice! Is it residential or commercial?

Thanks, it is a level 3 office ;) I was thinking about making it lvl 5 commercial, but they spawn too early and in too high numbers for my taste... on a side note, could anyone explain the exact definition of commercial and office zones in C:S? I know that they work differently in the gameplay mechanics, but in the real world there seems no comparable "division" of business types  :???:

Detailed model finished, was a little more tricky than expected. Rendering the textures and doing the UV mapping will take another two days so expect the model around saturday, sunday at the latest.

This is going to be one of the best custom content yet! The texture is very nice indeed!

And how are the LOD levels?

Thanks again! The LOD is usually the last thing I do. Modeling it takes just a few minutes, for this one probably less than two :D Then I bake the textures from the main model onto it, which is done with a few clicks. But I've seen the LOD generated by the game, and it looks surprisingly nice. The LOD algorithm works quite well for simple buildings.

The asset is now finished but I can't upload it. First it takes forever to upload, then it produces a private file of zero size and without preview picture. Tried it from two computers and with different assets, always getting the same result. Guess Steam is broken again...

Are you sure that the preview file is 640x362 ? Because I had the same problem too...
