Since there is a thread on what people think are the world's worst buildings, What do you guys think are the worlds best buildings. My favorite building has to be the Shangai World Financial Center currently being built.

It has so much elegance and dominance. To me the best buildings are always the ones that have the least design and complexity. As you can see, the building has 4 planes. the sides, and the two parts the lead to the top of the building. The hole may look a bad to some people, but to me it gives the building character, I dont think I have seen a skyscraper with a gigantic hole in the top.

You posted a render of the old design. The new design features a rectangular hole, instead of a circular one, because of complaints that the circle looked too Japanese. Seriously .

Also, there are a few other skyscrapers here and there with big holes cut out of them.

AMA World Headquarters in Chicago:

Reliant Energy Plaza in Houston:

I'm sure there are more, but yeah, it's definitely a cool (or at least distinctive) architectural gimmick.

If there's one thing I really love about Los Angeles, it's the USBank Tower (formerly the Library Tower)... the one that get's blown up in ID4.

The shape of it gives it this skyline within a skyline appearance. I also like the way the windows are slightly pointed outward... must make the view from inside totally awesome, especially if on the south side of the building! And building it on one of the highest elevation points in downtown makes it look all the more central.

Totally neat-o cheeto bandito architecture =]

The Argentinian Congress Building in Buenos Aires, is one of the most imposing buildings in the world, i think.

Here is one that is not amazing but cool looking, especiall when put in London
The Millennium Dome which was a total flop

MY favourate building is the Looyds building in london, designd by Richard Rogers and bassicly an extension of his earlier work Centre Pompidou the design follows the principal of keeping things such as a/c ducts, lift shafts and heating pipes on the exterior instead of hideing them in walls, the design embraces the future. he went on to design the millenium dome wich someone has already posted, you can see in that building the same principals, the giant supporting towers that hold the building up are all on the outside in plain view

If we're talking towers, then the Chrysler Building. So iconic I don't even need to post pics of it.

    The West Virginia Capital Building:

    charleston_capital.jpg

Not to mention it's located in an absoltely beautiful area, right on the Kanawha River and surounded by mountains, the city of Charleston isn't much to look at, but the capital is quite stunning.

Philadelphia City Hall -- still the world's largest and tallest masonary building; the most adorned building in the world; the clock face on the tower is larger than Big Ben's; it stood as the world's tallest building from 1901-1907 and when construction started in 1870 it was conceived as the tallest free standing structure in the world; they once debated demolishing the building however when estimates came out that it would cost over 700 million dollars to demolish (back in 1980) they decided to just leave it alone; in 1995 they started a 10 years reburbishing that is almost complete.

These threads should be more specific, like Your Favourite Skyscraper or Stadium or Cathedral etc.

I have lots of favourite buildings in different categories, it's hard to pick one overall 'favourite' or 'best' and hard to view/compare the posts if everyone is posting different types of building.

I'd say some of my favorites are:
    The Trans American Building
    TAPBuilding.jpg
I dont know why, I just always thought that the shape was very interesting. It really adds to the SF Skyline when you see it across the bay.
    Empire State Building
    016%20%20NY%20Empire%20State%20Building.
I have always associated this building as a symbol of America, just the lines and look of it makes it look powerful.

But my favorite buildings would have to be:
The Sim City 2000 Arcologies. 3.gif

Here is a Great Building. The New Massachusetts State House. The New State House's goldleaf dome was laid by the one and only Paul Revere.

Personally, I think that the world's best, most amazing, most building is the Statue of Liberty. It is a true monument to liberty, freedom, democracy, and it is a symbol of America. By the way, that picture of the Buenos Aires capital building reminds me of the White House in the U.S. capitol, only it seems a little smaller and less decorative.

The Exhibition building in Melbourne Australia is the only world heritage listed building in Australia. Shame I don't have a picture of it.
