Incredibly low frame rate in game.

I'm not sure why this is happening, but for some reason I'm getting an (unplayably low) framerate in-game of about 7-10 FPS. It's really strange, on the main menu my frame rate is perfect, but as soon as I try to start a city it just fails on me and I am forced to close it.

My PC is capable of playing Cities in Motion 2 perfectly (though interestingly, I get the exact same issue in Cities in Motion 1 as I do in Skylines) so I doubt my computer specs are not unable to run it.

Any advice on how to fix it so I can enjoy this game?

It's impossible to know unless you tell us your system specs, but...

Cities in Motion 2 minimum required specs:

  • OS:Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7/8
  • Processor:2 GHz Dual core
  • Memory:3 GB RAM
  • Graphics:nVIDIA GeForce 8800, 512 MB RAM or ATI Radeon HD 3850, 512 MB RAM
  • DirectX®:9.0

Cities: Skylines minimum requires specs:

  • OS: Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7/8/8.1 (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo, 3.0GHz or AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+, 3.2GHz
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: nVIDIA GeForce GTX 260, 512 MB or ATI Radeon HD 5670, 512 MB
  • DirectX: Version 9.0c

Cities: Skylines has a much higher baseline just to get it squeaking along. It's perfectly possible your system manhandles Cities In Motion 2 but isn't quite up to the demands of Cities: Skylines. It's also possible that Cities: Skylines isn't optimized, or that your video card drivers aren't handling the game well.

I figured it out, but thank you anyway. I'll post the solution here for anybody who has the same problem:

The problem is with the Intel ® graphics cards. The game (and Cities in Motion 1, for that matter) simply don't like them. However, they are unable to automatically detect this and switch to an alternative graphics card (in my case, Nvidia).

You have to open the Nvidia Control Panel under programs.

Go to Manage 3D Settings. Under Global Settings select 'High-Performance Nvidia Processor'. Hit apply.

Then go to program settings, click add, find Cities.exe (Cities Skyline) and select it. Beneath it, select 'High-Performance Nvidia Processor' again. Then hit apply.

This'll force Cities Skyline to run using your Nvidia GPU and fix the issue. Can confirm the game runs perfectly fine after these steps.

I assume there is a similar solution for other GPU's, but you'll have to figure that out on your own.

The game has no opinion about your video card, it's just that Intel HD Graphics are usually ver poor performers in games. It's a video card that's built-in to your CPU to provide basic Video IO in case you don't have a dedicated GPU (yet). That's why you bought the nVidia card, remember? Once you realize software doesn't judge, so shouldn't you. The game read your system configuration wrong. Now ask yourself who's to blame: your system, nVidia, Intel or the game?

Thank you Vayatir for your answer

I dont have intel graphics enabled and i dont see the option "High-Performance Nvidia Processor"  but i added cities skyles under the program settings and selected the options:

Multi-display/mixed-GPU acceleration = Single display performance mode
Power management mode = Prefer maximum performance

This worked for me with a 660 Ti and Intel 3770K

One other thing that can help is the amount of system ram you have I recently went from 8 to 16 gig, and have found that once the city is loaded play is a lot smoother.. I have done nothing special and I have a 2 gig 650GTX TI card,  before the memory upgrade I would get a lot of lag problems and slow downs and more..

When I put in the 16 gig I brought up task manager and noticed that the initial memory outlay was over 12 gig now I understood why before my game would be so slow before the memory upgrade..  The interesting thing about all of this is that while the initial outlay would be over 12 gig after a while that would drop back to around about 7 to 8 gig..

I do have a few added mods and assets but in all it is interesting the more you add in from the Workshop the more ram one needs.. lol :D
