Laurence

Hi to everyone again. I have started a new project some time ago. It is, or will be, an american style city of medium size. Now some areas are starting to look like I want them to look. So I thought I could as well show them to you to hear what you think about it.
Those of you who have seen my UK village will know that my first and most important goal is realism. Realistic landscape, realistic city shape, realistic transport and realistic building. It is hard to get it and takes a lot of time. But I think it is worth the efford.

First, as a teaser, I will show you some details, some impressions of how this new city looks like. The pictures are in no particular order and at least this time I will not explain them in depth.

Have fun!

Wellcome to Laurence! Thank you for your reply. Sorry, but it isn't supposed to be an european city. It should be an american city. And I think that many american cities are griddy...

This project looks good so far barnatom. I like your railway layout a lot. I'm curious how this will turn out, since I'm working on an American style city myself (although there is not one style... the U.S. is a big country).

Looks like I'm following this from now on.

Welcome to Laurence! And thank you for your nice words! There will be a lot more of interesting railway design in the future.

    Simworld 056132:
Hey, nice to see you here. How is the cloning going on? And thank you for your suggestion about simgoober's shops. Some malls are already planned.

    soldyne:
I am glad that you like the city until now. It would be nice to see you again here.

And now some more pictures. Not as soon as promised, but, well, here they are.

This time I will show you one borough of Laurence, north of downtown. It is an old part of the city, poor and medium class people live there. It was build in the 19th century and some buildings might be of the early 20th century. But see for your self...

Here you can see where this part of the city is located:

Certainly your goal of realism was met.  Nice job.  The buildings match the city.

Anyway, how much of the buildings are BATs?  I'm trying to start downloading them and a lot of the stuff in your city looks cool.

The 3.1 area and close ups look, well I guess nice wouldn't be the appropriate term. I assume it is not that nice of an area, if it's not it looks that way. And if it is you did a good job of recreatating the look and feel. Can't wait to see more.

This new C.J. of yours is excellent. The areas you have shown are incredable realistic and completly R$ which amazes me because making the R$ look realistic is tough to say the least. The transit system looks and functions nicely it appears and the bats used are many, but also look grand amoung the maxis content.Nicely done and I'm on the edge of my seat for more!

Sooo many replies! I am very glad that you are so much interested. Thank you very much. This is very encouraging.

    Mikeaut1:
Thank you very much. Yes, I will stay with this.

    Simworld 056132:
New York is indeed one of the cities that inspired me most. Not for its size, naturally, but for its building style. Yes, I will stay with this.

    Fischbob:
Thank you very much for this compliment. Yes, I will keep it up.

    sloppet:
Thank you, too. And you will always be welcome here again.

    jacqulina:
Nice to see you here, too. And thank you for your nice words.

    pickled_pig:
I am glad to hear that I met my goal. About the buildings: What you saw in the last two updates are almost all buildings from the STEX. Have a look for Don Miguel or yticmic and you will find many of them.

    Nardo69:
Hey, welcome back so soon! I think it is more $ than $$. And definately it has a little bit of a slummy apearence.
I am glad, that you think, that this one goes as well as my UK village went.
    Bis bald.

    aleking:
Thank you very much. A compliment as yours from a person who is itself an expert in 'eye-candy' is worth a lot.

    GMT:
Thank you very much! Yes I use the STEX buildings often and am very glad that others put so much time into the development of them.

    ak72:
Yes, you are right. The area shown in the last two updates wasn't meant to be a 'nice' borough. It is a poor peoples area.

    Cjah:
Thank you very much for this comment of yours. Nice to hear, that you see it as realistic.

    PhilsCafe:
Yes, that is exactly why I like this area that much. Thank you.

Today I will present you an area that is located right next to the borough I showed you last time.

    First an overview:

    laurencep5p10wd.jpg width=480 alt=Image
    5.1

This is a new appartment block project. It breaks the wall to wall pattern of its surroundings to bring more light and fresh air to the flats of the people living there. This are no luxury appartment either. They are middle sized for middle class people.
As you can see, two buildings are still under construction.

    laurencep5p29er.jpg
    5.2

    Some details:

    laurencep5p37qs.jpg
    5.3

    laurencep5p44xi.jpg
    5.4

Right in front of this complex, there is the local transit hub. A small rail station for the local trains, a subway station and some bus stations.
From the rail station there goes a short distance line directly to Laurence Main Station, providing a rapid conection to downtown.

    laurencep5p58zp.jpg
    5.5

    A detail:

    laurencep5p69je.jpg
    5.6

The southern road bridge over the rail:

    laurencep5p78vl.jpg
    5.7

At the other side of the rail tracks there are some comercials:

    laurencep5p83xx.jpg
    5.8

    A diner:

    laurencep5p95gz.jpg
    5.9

The northern bridge over the rail and an old train maintenance facility.
Many years ago, this whole area was a huge railyard serving the trains that went from Laurence Main Station to all the cities in the country. But now many people prefere to go by car or even by aircraft. So the big railyard wasn't needed anymore and was replaced by the buildings you have just seen. This little rail workshop is all that is left:

    laurencep5p108hj.jpg
    5.10

Here another overview. You can see how the new buildings in the place of the former railyard are much younger than the surrounding brick tenements:

    laurencep5p113zx.jpg
    5.11

    One last thing:
Sometimes I am able to observe that our beloved sims are taking rather curious ways to work:

    laurencep5p122fa.jpg
    5.12

The last picture is showing an area that is still under construction. You can take it as a small teaser for the next update.

That's it for today. I hope you like what you see!

I again like that rail line, passing by the commercial area and than going 'underground'. It looks very realistic with the overpasses and all the mid-rise apartments in close proximity.

The transportation hub looks interesting. I like how you put that together.

    Great update again barnatom.

Thank you very much for your interest. To all of you!

I have decided, that I like the style of Laurence very much, although I haven't shown you all of it, not even the smallest part of it. But - I think that this project deserves a better map. A better landscape and a bigger scale.
That for I will close this CJ and start a new one. Cadott Bay . In this new region I will continue the work on an american city. But this time it will be much more of a city. It will be a whole region, with cities, towns, villages, forests, rivers and seas.

    Have a look!

I hope this is not too disapointing news.

And thank you again for posting that much here in this CJ. It is very nice to have such great an audience. Thank you.

See you in Cadott Bay !
