Will you be making the LA River lots dry canals like they are portrayed in the movies? Those would look awesome for cities in more arid regions.

I plan on making two versions .. dry and filled. If I can figure out how I might also make a version of them that are filled part of the year, and dry the rest (like the real thing).

Wow, that'll be GREAT! Now if only you can get high-speed car chases going on through the canals 3.gif

Another interesting thing about the real LA canals are the art-deco bridges over them. Will you get those in too?

It may be tough to get the canals to fill and unfill... It'll be interesting to see if that works.

I noticed that you transit-enabled the U-store_it lot. Very impressive for a new BATer. 1.gif

BTW, I think that Sydney, Austrailia has canals similar to the LA River too. Not sure though.

High Speed chases, hmmmm .. I guess I could TE the canals, but then you'd just get traffic jams 1.gif

Bridges ... You can bet on it. It just may take a bit longer on some of those.

Fill and unfill ... If PEG can get lift bridges to work ... we'll see.

As for me being so impressive as a new BATer ... I doubt it would be quite so impressive if not for all the great tools, and wonderful Tutorials here. The fact I learn quickly is just icing on the cake.

I am not happy with the textures, but this should give an idea of what I am trying to do. This is the Dry version. The photo's I have seen of the LA River always had a little water in them.

    LA%20River%20Basin.jpg
I am going to play around with a few other textures and see what I can come up with, then Will start on a series of lots that will let you build a whole system. Any suggestion on lots will be welcomed. Texture suggestions also welcomed. While I am at it ... any help is welcomed 17.gif

Hmm, could it be rounded out?

And if you need textures, just ask, if I cant get one for you, someone else can.

Rounded? Well this is the look I am after ..

so rounding is not the best choice for it, however, a rounded version in the future is possible.

Becca.. on you latest release, the installer is adding a bunch of un-necessary files.  Here's a screenie of the folders..  Not sure what these are, but I don't think you meant them to be there...

Sorry, my mistake. Those are normally hidden files created by FrontPage. I forgot to delete them. I'll clean it up and do an update.

Wow, you're off to a good start on the LA River lots! The concrete textures could be lightened up quite a bit, maybe a sort of off-beige stained concrete (like the water damage on the current texture though!). The water could look a little more murkier-I dunno. The shots I've seen of it on the movies make it look like normal water just slightly muddy, maybe polluted?

The shape is probably where you want it. Looking very promising Becca!

    LA River Update...

Still not happy with the water texture, Thinking of making it just a single color like simgoober's canals.

    <ahttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files//RLM_LA%20River_v2.jpg align=baseline>
Like the real thing, I am making some with slanted walls and some with straight walls.

    Becca,

While I must say you have gotten a hold of the BAT, I would like to offer some suggestions.

The last lot you uploaded, I feel the LOT is holding it back. I think you should not have grass. Many of the Storage Places around me have cement or asphalt throughout the whole of the complex. This way trucks and cars can pull up to individual garages and off load with a little carrying as possible. Grass would get pretty messy, especially after a rain or the spring thaw. Just a suggestion if you feel the need to update said LOT.

And, in reference to the LA River canal. This is a good idea, especially for bigger cities to control river paths. I do have a question, is what you have shown one large BAT or is it a mash of BATS onto seperate LOTS?

Also, in regards to the texture, very, very tiled. Maybe you could make a large cement texture (128 pixels for every 16 meters in game) and then adding some blurring, some shadows, some dirt spots to break up the tiled look. Also, the GMAX renders always show colors much, much brighter than they are. It is a shame. While some people do different things, I have found that the tutorial by GasCooker is a great resource for textures. Or, if you want an easier project, just darken the texture by about 30% (or more if it is a light texture). That should make the texture show up as you intended.

And I want to warn you about the water texture. Something like SimGoober's texture, outside of the canal, looks rather flat and dull. I have tested this and it does not look good. What makes the canals look decent is the addition of the 'water sparkle effect' prop in the LE. But I'm afraid you would not be able to use it as your water is smaller than a tile wide. I would say take a look at some of the water textures available that can be tiled and see if they are what you want. To insure continuity you would need something that can be tiles, but only over a large distance, that way it does not look repetative like yours does now.

And, I would like to make a content suggestion. If you have many of the same straight river canals together it will look boring. Perhaps making a few random prop families that add some abandoned cars or weeds would make them more realistic, although I realize you are probably not looking at that right now as the BATs have to be made first.

And I think that is it for right now. I would just like to point out that you are brave for working on the BAT and showcasing stuff, because, well, where is my thread, right? (And that is not an invitation to anyone to go dredging up my BAT Thread, if it exists.) But I have taken it to mean that you are looking for comments and suggestions. And that is what I hope I can offer you, a way to improve upon your foundation. I salute you and your work and hope you can keep it up.

We have several of these (low end) storage places that have only grass, which is why this 'one' is like that. It is a low wealth lot, and is like the real life Lot, except for the parking area, which in the RW is gravel.

This is a work in progress... the end result should begin to look better as I go on. I'd like to have one large texture, divided into parts, and will do this in the near future. As far as the brightness, I'll just have to play with it untill it looks good. 1.gif

Abandon cars? great idea, keep them comming. You are right, right now I am just getting the basic lots put together, then I plan on adding random effects, including grifitti. 1.gif

Ofcourse I want the comments, how else can one improve if one does not know where one is going wrong? Thank you for all the kind words, and all the suggestions. Believe me when I say, ALL of them are considered.

    LA River Update:

I think I have finally found a base texture for the river pieces, this water texture is not too bad either, just needs some tweeking.
I'm planning on doing some distressing of the river textures, but I did not want them all the same, so I'll be doing that after I get the basic pieces done.

Brilliant! The storage building looks great! And I just love your LA river lot, I've been wanting someone to do that for a long time! And I'm really glad that you have taken it on, I look forward to seeing it develop because at the moment the BAT looks great.

    Keep up this beautiful work!

As you can see, I now have one of the buildings done, and this place is a bit more spacious than previous versions. This is going to be a Cs$$ LOT when done.
