Would Sim City (2013) be worth my time?

Hi! I'm a big fan of Sim City 4 (and 2k years back), but I've never acquired the newest Sim City game because of the bad feedback it got during it's release. I'm now wondering if I should still give it a chance. I have Cities XL platinum, and while I have enjoyed it, there's just something missing in that game.

So have the problems with Sim City been fixed?

1. I've also read that the maps are very small and you cannot actually build big cities. Is this true?

2. I've also read that in order to get your cities function well, you have to use the multi-player feature and do business with other players. I'm a bit of a lone wolf and the idea of forced mp sounds awful to me.

3. Can you create your own maps and regions and connect your cities like in SC 4 (this was one of the best features in the game IMO)?

4. Anything else you might want to share about the game? Why do you like/dislike it?

I know the game is only 10 euros on origin at the moment, but I would still like to know these things before I buy it. Thanks for anyone who replies!

Personally, I didn't go near it till it was taken offline, yes the maps are small and no you can't create your own regions but with the advent of extended 3k mod it does help. There are a load of mods for this game, that will enhance the game, you don't have to play with others...I don't play well with others, hence why I'm a single player lol

If I were you, I would get the trial version and see if you like it, at least then you will know. I played 2k 3k and small bit of 4k and now 5. I only 5 is better than 4 but each to their own...

Word of advice though, if your intending to play on a lower end gpu, don't. Otherwise the game will freeze and the only way out will be a hard boot..

Good luck.

SimCity 2013 is NOT a successor to SimCity 4. Instead, it's more like a reboot of the entire series, whereas it's been taken back to square one. Therefore, if you're anticipating a "SimCity 5," you'd be terribly disappointed. I'd recommend looking at this game as if it's an entirely new game, and playing it with an open mind. Yes, most of us on this forum have a negative opinion of the game, but have also put in hundreds of hours of gameplay. So, if you can buy it for a discounted price, I'd say go for it. You will be entertained, nonetheless. I don't regret my purchase at all, despite the fact I bought it on day one.

Thanks, both of your comments were very enlightening. I actually tried to get the trial but the site just stated that it's not available in my country (Finland). Anyway, I think I will give it a try. The complete edition is just 15€, so even if it wouldn't be my favorite game, I don't loose much.

I try to look it as a new game and not to compare it too much with SC4. I don't hold much prejudice against gameplay changes, so I think I'll be fine with it, if the game is fun. I hope the game will find it's place in somewhere between Tropico and CitiesXL.

It is a great game despite all the flame, you will have fun. There are many limitations, but the core mechanics are really refreshing and satisfying for the most part. Cities XL has absolutely no soul and feels more like a painting machine to me, although it is fun for many people. BTW I suggest you follow the Cities: Skylines forums, should be out in a few months and looks very promising so far :).

I'd love to try SimCity 2013 myself. There are problems and issues with it that I don't like, but I can live with. The one thing that totally kills the game for me is the ridiculously small city size. I never liked the idea of "skyscraper-only" cities either, which a lot of people on here seem to do.

The thing is, it's hit the point that future EA updates are doubtful.  If you're going to try the game after it has been updated and fixed as far as it will go, we've hit that point.

Thanks for everyone. I got the game now, and it sure is different from SC4. But it also seems fun, even though I started at least three towns before I managed to establish somewhat self sustaining community. It seems harder than most of the modern city builders out there. And it's only a good thing. I'm having some lag issues because I maxed the graphics. I think the game looks just awful with lower settings but with max settings it's really nice to look at. I am planning to get a new gpu anyway, so this shouldn't be a problem for long.

In my opinion on SC2013, it's really boring. The reason I say that is because I feel like they could had done more with this game. In this day and age, we have the technology (or game engines) to make great games. I also feel like they rushed it too, that they didn't took enough time to make it possible to build a life-like city simulation with rhw/highways, railways (through and around the city), huge map sizes, trams, subways, etc. I know that they said it's because of their engine that they couldn't do all of that or something, but I just feel like they could had done way better. But if you want to try it you can, and I would recommend mods for it too.

I have played SimCity 2013 ever since it first came out, and I think that the amazing possibilities brought out with Offline Mode and awesome level of simulation mostly make up for its flaws. Our SC community is already pionerring great new mods that change the face of the game in a matter of months. Just think what we can do as a community after a couple years. Ill even bet you that by the end of 2015, we will have found a way to even make our own regions, like in good old SC4. So yes, I do think it is worth it.

Keep an eye on Cities: Skylines, I think that is what Simcity 2013 could have been if it aimed to be a successor to Simcity 4 or given more time to develop.
