Here is a freeway i have created with express lanes (middle).

This first is of the northern end of the express lanes.  They dont continue YET because of a river, but in the future i will probably continue them.  To the left of this freeway would be the CBD.  This same city with this freeway also has an extremely extensive passenger rail system that i created, in which rail/road crossings are extremely rare

src=<ahttp://xs64.xs.to/pics/06032/f5.JPG onload=xsXL(this);>

Proof that this system really works - made me so happy, and it works so well

src=<ahttp://xs64.xs.to/pics/06032/f2.JPG width=742 onload=xsXL(this);>

Wide look at a part of the system

src=<ahttp://xs64.xs.to/pics/06032/f3.JPG width=742 onload=xsXL(this);>

A little bit more north

src=<ahttp://xs64.xs.to/pics/06032/f4.JPG width=742 onload=xsXL(this);>

This next picture shows how i got extra lanes through a freeway/freeway interchange.  The 2 outermost oneway streets are considered part of the freeway - they would be the same as the 3 outer lanes in the previous photos:

src=<ahttp://xs64.xs.to/pics/06032/f8.JPG width=742 onload=xsXL(this);>

In the top of the picture you see the lanes go into tunnels under the interchange:

There's not too much here, but this is my region of 650,000 sims and I have just connected most of it to the highway system.  I've been pretty happy with this accomplishment and feel I have a pretty good system going, one thing I noticed was the corners of cities being a hotbed for traffic and in the middle I have created a system to burn up some of that traffic from each region.

I know this is no where near the amazing screenshots I have seen in these posts, but I wanted to participate by providing at least something...

Thanks for the great content and discussions.

A little something I did where a highway running along the river crosses witha bridge approach. I didn't want to divert the riverside highway around the bridge, so I tunnelled under and used the idea of a previous poster in this thread to interchange the two.

This, and much more, will be part of my upcoming CJ. Watch out for it, eh. 2.gif

I just finished going through this whole thread. While there are some good ideas, most of what I saw, even though eye-catching, seemed to have no practical use. So if I may, I'd like to add something useful to this thread, not to say there isn't anything useful here already. While boring to look at, it may give others some ideas on how to handle their traffic problems.

Now the original thread said no grid networks. While at first glance this may appear to look grid like, I don't believe it is. If you all think it is, I'll remove it.

This transportation network is for those who build suburbs, which I happened to love to build. It uses subdivisions, maximizing the limitations of streets, roads and avenues. It is designed to work like roots of a tree. The smaller streets are used to collect the Sims from their homes. Roads are used to connect the streets, forming a simple subdivision, which is then connected to an avenue which carries the brunt of the Sims to work.

These images were from my first experiment with this system.

This is the avenues by themselves.
sc4-0019.jpg

This is a typical subdivision.
sc4-0023.jpg

This is the entire suburb area.
sc4-0024.jpg

The rest of these images are from a modified second attempt after seeing mistakes made with the first.

Here is the entire section after developement.
sc4-0020.jpg

No major problems.
sc4-0021.jpg

Here I used a one-way road to act as an access road to the industry section. This helped to take a lot of traffic off my avenue that runs in front of my industry section.
sc4-0022.jpg

A near perfect fit for my school zone.
sc4-0025.jpg

And while I am at it, from all the round abouts I saw, I don't remember seeing any for trains. So I quickly threw this together.
sc4-0026.jpg

Hope you all found something useful with all of that.

japerson:Those are some nice suburbs,but there are a lot of pratical uses for most of these freeway interchanges....

Ok here is a tunnel which goes under the Vena River in Bostalk.

Its easier to put it under ground and by putting it underground more residents came to town.44.gif

Let's revive this great thread!

I found a couple of old pictures of a city I was planning to make a CJ out of, and I decided to post my -rather common- transportation pics.

1. A rapid transit line ruining a nice scenery
Dakota.jpg

2. A small downtown with its main street and rail line crossing.
DoTo.jpg

3. The City Hall, conveniently placed between elevated lines.

4. A elevated line running along Almeida Avenue on garbage day.

Looking forward to seeing your pictures!

OK guys thats it... I just want to know HOW you guys made these? I was told not to use Highways and thats almost ALL I see how do you guys make such realistic looking cities? Cheating!?! If so then it all makes sense... if not then HOW!?! I mean I get to 150k people and have really bad commute times with 5 trains and 2 avenues splitting up the city everything else is streets at angles to make less intersections and i STILL have red everywhere.... same if they are all roads.. ANY help would be great.. Is it easier to Cheat first THEN make real maps?

Also is it easier to say build up a couple small 'towns'  and build them up into wealthy? in a city then connecting them all with commerce in the center and industrial outside the map? I get lost on where to place what... Any help would be nice!! PM me on AIM if you could!! im always on if im AWAY leave message anyway.

Transportmapbigreally.JPG

Also on that above picture by "kingofsimcity" what region is that and where can i DL it? JUST the region NOT the cities in it!

Originally trying to make a SPUI with NAM pieces, I ended up with a large diamond interchange. I liked the design and it was functionally better than an ordinary interchange so used it on my other suburbs.

image14hz.jpg

I then proceeded to use it on a sunken highway.

Nice job, scrap, but the highway looks like a rollercoaster : it plunges below a bridge, rises again on the other side, etc.

I agree....how did you do that?

When I try to place off-ramps, the game automatically places a one-way road on the tile that the off-ramp ends...so the transition from ramp to one-way-raod isnt seamless (it looks like the road starts before the one-way ramp intersects it). How did you get it to look like this?
