Hi all,

The thing I like the most in Sim City is creating networks (roads, highways, rails, etc) and when I joined ST in July, I thought I had fully experienced all the networks options and potential offered by SC4. But as soon as I visited the CJ forums, I realised by looking at some excellent CJ (Santa Lucia from Dargor for example and many many other great CJ from other members I unfortunatly forget) that a lot more of things were possible. For example, I never thought of building an underground highway under my downtown. Before, I had in mind that tunnels were only useful for montains and cliffs and almost never used them. Now I use very often tunnels and I would like to thanks the dude who did the Holes Digging Lots (I forget his name too 18.gif, sorry) because it's extremely easy to make tunnels where you want. Looking at all the great pictures of cities made by others, mostly in the CJ forums, helped me a lot because it gave me a new vision and a lot of new ideas and I'm a lot more creative when the time come to build roads for my Sims.

So I'm starting this thread because I would like that people post pictures of their networks. And I'm not talking about grids networks, I personnaly hate grids and try by all means to not build my networks this way. What I would like to see here is imaginative creative and original networks ie: everything except grids 18.gif. I think this could be very useful for everyone because it'll give new idea to everyone. Even if the game has it own limitations, there are almost infinite ways of building a network and with the NAM (BTW, thanks a lot Tropod, T7T and all the others, you're doing an amazing work)now, we constantly have new options.

So I'll begin myself :

1) This is the busiest intersection in my SimNation

/idealbb/files/network0041.jpg

2) The main accesses to my commercial downtown

/idealbb/files/network0011.jpg

3) First layout for the tunnel that goes directly to downtown

/idealbb/files/network003a1.jpghttps://www.simtropolis.com/idealbb/files/network003a1.jpg>

4) The final layout

/idealbb/files/network003.jpg

More pictures will come later, including a 8-directions roundabound (sp?)! Post your pictures too, I want to see your networks!

Interesting stuff. In one of my cities, i have a cloverleaf that is sunken, and well foliated with many flowering trees, and parks. Ill try to get a pic of that soon.

SC4, Forevermore!

Currently preoccupied with architecture school...lurking with caution.

Ouch. And I thought my layouts were a bit... crazy... but these are insane!!!

Certainly gives me some ideas for the suburbs in my next region.

WHere did you get those rail overpasses?

My layouts aren't crazy, but some of them are quite impressive IMO. I'll show them later.

Well, since I've only really ever worked on one region, this is about the best I've got. I've got a port and railyard located pinned between a river and a mountain, so not much space. I just put the railyard right over the access road and rail for the port. It was expensive to get the terrain all at the right level, but I think it looks nice enough and is functional. None of the roads intersect the rail, so trains don't ever have to interrupt traffic.

The overpasses are part of the NAM witch is an incredible project by T7T and many others.

Thanks for the comments. Like it was said, all the underpasses are from Marrast and the overpasses come from the NAM. Thank you ryleeys for your picture. I like how you connected your seaport with tunnels and the little cul-de-sac you did with an avenue at the end of your road.

Today I have two other pictures to show. These are two experimental intersections I created. I say experimental because I never use them for real in a city up to now. I only built them in an undevelopped area because I was messing around with roads and finally ended up with these. So I don't know if they are efficient for traffic. But I'm planning to incorporate these two to future cities.

    1) This is a kind of roundabound, this is a great layout for putting statues or other decoration things in the middle.
    /idealbb/files/network005.jpg

    2) I'm proud of this one : a weird 8-directions roundabound! I'll try building bigger ones to replace all the roads by avenues and one-ways.

Wow, I thought I had some trippy layouts, but you take it to a whole new level1.gif. I don't use one-way roads very much, I guess I'm just not sure where the best place to utilize them and how they will affect traffic. Again, excellent work on creating some truly dizzying intersection, keep 'em coming.

I'm working on this area yet, and thinking about a CJ.  Whad'ya tink? 30.gif

Omg what a great idea for a forum post! i will definatly post mine although their not as good as any of yours, and that region O_o my regions arent very good as i have focused on 1 of the larger city types (you no the really big square thingy on region view, i forgot what they called!41.gif) And im developing that city into a megolopolis, completly 1 city, so far though its only metropolis size because i need more ram that takes up half that city lot thing though. I have some real traffic issues there though! i have to use, sub, el, loads of avenues rail and i have masses and masses of highways everywhere i dont have any monorails though, they didnt seem efficient enough to me. Ill get screen shooting right away! 44.gif

6.gif 1 last thing, Dr hehe where any chance you no where you got those rail to el transitions and that bus/coach in the first screen shot?

I've already showed this in the NAM topic, so I want to show it here too..

A four way interchange (It looks like a giant roundabout..)
    4WAYINTERCHANGE.jpg

    ...and a six way interchange...
    6WAYINTERCHANGE.jpg

And of course.. I know someone will ask where to download the Y intersections.. In the MODS section, search for Network Addon...

The rail to elevated transition can be found on this japanese site . This is the direct link for download. The buses skins are on SCC. The one I use is here but there are many other skins for buses, trains, monorails and other vehicles.

drool 66: I can only see the picture of your region transportation map, but it seems interesting.

xurros: I've seen your pictures in the NAM thread yesterday and it was a really good idea. I would have never think of doing this myself. Good job! I'll probably use this one day.

I'll upload new pictures this evening or tomorrow. I've been messing around with multi-highways and I've done a lot of impressive things. I'm still thinking of other great uses for this.

Ok i got some screens, theyre not great but o well, ill try not to get carried away (try)

<---Picture removed for being oversized.  Please reduce to 800x600 and repost--->

The New Areas Of the City have Well connected transport links

    USA-Sep252121096057064.png
A Class Roads can be Avenues or Highways and they normally branch off of other highways.
I then Have M class highways which are city wide
Then I (interstate) Class highways which go right down the region
It's a mix of american and European Highway coding

<---Picture removed for being oversized.  Please reduce to 800x600 and repost--->

Iterstates Have almost No Direct Junctions just a large number of clover leafs and T sections to other A and M highways

    USA-Sep252121096057306.png
I Frequently use underpasses under the city

    USA-Sep252121096057351.png
In the Newest Industrial sector i now have massive underground roads which take the  majority of cargo trucks under the city away from busy roads (very good idea!)

    USA-Sep252121096057483.png
Im testing out restricting the roads around this bus station to allow buses only.

    USA-Sep252121096057626.png
On Busy avenue junctions i also use turning lanes however there were too many high rises for me to get a decent screen shot of this

    USA-Sep252121096057701.png
This can also be adapted like a round about like so, but im not really sure if theres any point in this ive only used it once

Wow i hope that worked not sure if any of those pictures are relevant but that was something to do 14.gif got lots more lol but decided i wouldnt bore you or overload your browser cache's with more pictures (sorry about the size)

Aha! So that's how you use the stack interchanges.
Someone said they couldn't see my pictures, so here they are again:

drool66 : I can see your pictures now. I really like your messy interchanges! Good job!

nonessentialnoodle : Great pictures! I love your idea about turning lanes. So I took your idea and modified it a little. Then I modified it more and more and came with astonishing results. I'll show the pictures later.

einstein2000 : Arrondissement Westmount hmm? Then I guess you are from Montr

There are some pretty cool networks out there. Just a few from my first city.

    (Pics hosted offsite.)

    1. International Plaza Interchange.

This was originally an avenue T intersection but as ferry usage grew and the CBD got bigger it became more and more congested. This is the fourth upgrade to this intersection.

    IntlPlaza1.jpg

    IntlPlaza2.jpg

    IntlPlaza3.jpg

    2. The CBD is a maze of one-way roads, there is not a single 2-way street, reoad or avenue in the entire CBD.

    CBD1.jpg

    3. The Distibutor. A very busy place during rush hour.

It's interesting to see how all your cities look so nice and well planned, the majority of mine (especially the old parts) are in boring block formatts and with the idea,'fit as many people into this small space as possible' and waste as little space as possible with roads.

Btw thatnks for the links doctor

Hey, all very cool, as soon as I get my own computer working again I'll add some of my own. I have a city where there are absolutly no intersections where one direction of traffic has to cross another direction of traffic.

edcase2k4 : I have looked at the first pages of your CJ and it seems really interesting, I'll soon take the time to read (or at least look) at all the pages.

theyeti : It was a very good idea to only use one-way roads in those sector, it gives a really original result. I like it.

I said I was messing around with multi-highways in another post, so here are the pictures:

    1) An interchange with a parallel avenue
    /idealbb/files/network009.jpg

    2) Avenue crossing the highway
    /idealbb/files/network009b1.jpg

    3) Another interchange between two parallel avenues and between the main highway and the collector lanes
    /idealbb/files/network009c.jpg

    4) How to end a multi-highway
    /idealbb/files/network009d.jpg

    5) This is what the transportation map of the city I'm experimenting new layout look like.
    /idealbb/files/teaser.jpg
The big red thing on the left is a fully fonctionnal interchange between 4 different highways I'm working. It's almost finished. I'll show pictures of this and of those big roundabounds later.
