Concepts for Ave. Intersections

During my early morning wake-up period today, for some reason I started thinking about Avenues in SC4 and what I could do with their extensions and intersections that would be a bit unique.  I came up with the 3 below.  I understand that the inside lanes of the avenues towards the center of the intersection are of no use, but if you look close, they aren't really needed.

.

These are just concepts of mine.  I may use one or two in a city or maybe just forget them all together.  Personally, I think they would look good in a city, but who am I to tell you guys what looks good and what doesn't?

You try to connect two-way roadways with single-direction roadways. That's not going to work. Use OWR instead...

Overall, I don't see any functional use in these designs. Especially design #2 is almost simillar to an avenue roundabout...

I haven't tried them in a city yet. You're saying they won't work? Besides the wasted lanes in the avenues, I don't see why not - I'll give them a try and report back here.  Remember, these are just concepts!

What's making this kind of setup really weird is that you're using a bug exploit. That kind of Avenue to double Road transition is only meant for transitioning Avenue to the NWM networks, not for use with anything else.

Using a transition from avenue to one way roads might help your designs function in game better. For instance, in your second picture if I were traveling eastbound on the western segment of avenue I would be forced to turn right and go south with no option to turn left or continue straight ahead on the east-west avenue.

The concept in picture one is a good start! I'd switch the roads to one way roads so that traffic on the avenues don't have to merge down to one lane. I think it's a good idea to leave some space like you did in case you ever needed to upgrade that intersection to a directional freeway interchange.

You'd probably also like using the volleyball intersections included in the RHW. Keep testing and show us your progress!

The way I see it (and if you are to replace the roads with OWrs, of course), #1 will work, but it will be larger than the standard avenue intersection and probably not as safe. #2 will not work. Sims can only turn right. #3 will work, but I don't see the point of the extra stretch of avenue going around the entire thing.

It's fun to see people experimenting with the networks, though. And a wise man once told me "experiments can't fail. All results are equally valuable to the final conclusion". :)

Just for the heck of it, I tried #2 in one of my cities and it did work!  But, there were 2 problems I found...

    1)   When traffic went moved from any of the Aves. to the roads, there was a big slow-down while passing thru the transition zone.

    2)   Traffic would do the standard Maxis "pop-up" on the inside lanes and get trapped until they disappeared.

    .

Note:  I didn't actually create these concepts as functioning systems - I was just trying to create a group of eye-pleasing intersections  8)

Use OWR instead of normal roads.

Also, #2 lacks an essential part to be useful: lanes for continuing straight or turning left traffic you can only turn right.

Instead of using roads, use one-way roads and that would fix the problem.

I do like the idea of having parks around the intersections.
