Alfred Nobel established a trust fund for the awarding of prizes in various endeavours out of the great industrial fortune he accumulated when he was living.  Many feel it is an apology for the invention of dynamite and converting his manufacturing company, Bofors, into making cannon.

Prize in Medicine Announced.

    Physics Prize Announced

    Three on a blue LED.

They broke into the newscast to announce this, and a special alert (usually reserved for earthquakes) flashed across the screen to tell us what the anchor couldn't stop talking about.  Akazawa Isamu.  I heard his name so many times that I'll never forget it.

    Chemistry prize shared by three.

For a new type of microscope.  Sounds like the committee was really reaching here.  This is really a physics thing.

Nice list of winners. I watched the press conference for the awarding of the physics prize and well I must say that I am impressed, Japan has been getting a lot of awards lately.

I wonder who will win the peace and the economics prizes.

The peace prize is such a political football that it is hard to guess at all.  You can bet that whoever gets it will be beyond all understanding.

True, some winners of the peace prize never actually promoted peace at all and some of those who should have won the prize never actually won at all.

Vlad is just feathering his nest.  He isn't much different from many of the other "peace" prize winners.  I hope he doesn't get it.

Well, just seing Vladimir Putin nominated for the Nobel peace prize says a lot on how prostituted currently this prize is...

Actually anyone in Norway's Parliament can nominate someone for the prize.

    Fingers crossed for Pope Francis!

Well, the Pope would be a good choice.  At the moment he is holding a consistory with the senior bishops concerning family doctrine.  Frankly, since these guys don't play the game, they shouldn't be making any rules.

Wait, Putin was nominated? Who the in world Putin that name in the nomination box?

Nah, I think it is psychology, since Putin was nominated for a peace prize, he will feel obliged to do anything to prevent war. Oops, that sounds like appeasement. Sorry Neville but I thought this political method has long been buried after the war?   :read:

I am actually excited for the economics as I want one myself but seeing all the diatribes against this field, I think I should hide now.

Concerning the Nobel peaceprize: as we know, it was given to Norway to give as an act of goodwill after the breakup of the norwegian-swedish union, now though the Nobel family has threathened to take back the peace prize to sweden due to all the failed awards

278 candidates has been nominated so the fact that Putin has been nominated might not be a big deal, there are many political left-wings people in norway who still support whats left of the communism movement.

Rome is is just talk talk, as always, I have more faith in U2 Bono. Also Edward Snowden is a hot candidate this year. Also
I hear people lists Novaja Gazeta, a Putin critical newspaper, as a candidate, with what is happening in Ukraine right at the moment.

Well its only one hour left til the winner of the Nobel Peaceprize is announced and we'll know if Sweden wants it back...

Dear me, I wish someone deserving wins the Nobel Prize. At the end of the day, it is the integrity of the awards we are talking about, we don't want to have Nobel laureates who are laughing stocks, now do we?

Good choice however it still bothers me that she was also nominated last year but nevertheless, it is a great choice indeed.

Because it was too early, it could be compared to as another Obama: A prize based on good intentions. Even Malala admitted it was too early: Quote :"I not should get the Nobel Peace Prize right now, because it's just too early. But when I see that I have built hundreds of schools and thousands of children are in school and receive education of good quality - when I've reached my goal - then I deserve it." Allthough she has started a movement that will shake the ground of muslim extremism, she still isnt there quite yet. Sadly, Kailash Satyarthi who for 30 years has saved thousands of indian children from child labour and and given them education will be the unkown one. I start to think I'm not so much in favour of shared prizes, allthough they both are worthy one

Quite wrong.  I was raised a Catholic but left the church over issues in Vatican II.  I am of no denomination, but I stick to the the Christian ethic because I prefer it to other codes.  However, I do proselytize for my new church of God the Utterly Indifferent.

Returning to our muttons: Peace prize awarded

Correctly, for a change.  If more women in the Muslim and Hindu worlds were treated like rational beings instead of slaves the world would be better off.  Educated women are a force for good, and the men in these state who strike me as illegitimate desperadoes of doubtful lineage should run in fear.  The Shere Khan of knowledge is after them.

Cool! I think she was well deserving of the Nobel Prize.
