Other than a brief experiment a few years ago I have put off going into canal work. NAM now has a canal feature so if you have that installed no need to download another unless for preference.

Would be good to see some suggestions and examples of what others have accomplished with canals and how they use them.

I personally haven't done too much with canals.  The only sets I have are what is available in NAM.  If you want to see what other people have done to get some ideas, search the city journals using the key word 'canals'.  I'm sure you will see plenty of examples of how people used canals in their cities.

Remember, you can always experiment either in a sandbox city or one of you other cities.  When you exit to region, simply chose 'Exit without saving'.  Once you get the hang of it and start creating canal systems that you like, then you can implement them in your 'real' cities.  Good luck and have fun.. :)

Excellent suggestion about experimenting in sandbox etc. Actually that is how I have learned to use the RHW by utilizing a sandbox. As for canals I just haven't gotten the burning desire yet. It will come I'm sure. Been too busy 'Mayoring' to get my hands dirty digging canals. ;)

Various features in this game can keep you entertained for years.  In my case, 11 years.  I haven't explored even the full extent of NWM let along RHW, and they keep adding things.  I doubt I'll ever catch up because I am more interesting in my rural towns that big urban centres, and I really don't see much use for a highway system when the maximum tile is only 4Km on a side.

Some people a simply fascinated by laying out these things.  I like seaports, water things like fishing ports, etc. and rural settings with lots of green space.  Other players are into vast airports.  This game is a lot of things, but dull isn't one of them.

After you downloaded the files, did you unzip them and put them in the Documents\SimCity 4\Plugins folder?

Also, be sure to check the Parks menu. I believe the items from both Oppie's and SimGoober's sets appear there.

When you say they didn't work, are you able to plop the pieces? The two canal sets by themselves are not functional in the sense of generating canal traffic. For a version of that you will need CanAM, which is part of the NAM.
