Tomb-Raider-800x200.jpg

Microsoft and Square Enix recently announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider is going to come out exclusively for the Xbox One.

Does it bother you? Do you think it is a smart decision? Will it hurt the Tomb Raider franchise? What do you think about Darrell Gallagher's rational for this move?

Update: Rise of the Tomb Raider is actually only a timed exclusive, but my questions still stand.

Hah idiots. They were complaining about the poor sales performance of the previous Tomb Raider (which sold over 3 million copies) and now they are limiting the release of this one to only one platform? Seems like they are setting themselves up to limited sales again.

Why is this an issue? Games coming out for one specific console only is normal and has been the case since there have been consoles. Manufacturers in recent years have geared toward releasing anything that they want to be a "blockbuster" game for multiple consoles, but it's hardly a scandal if they don't.

It is a issue because Square Enix took what everyone expected to be a multiplatform game and sold out to Microsoft for a quick buck thus screwing over the fan base that they are trying to build.

There is nothing wrong with console exclusives, especially when they are made by 1st party developers, but when a company like SquEnix deprives (temporarily) the fans of the sequel it creates an enormous amount of ill will.

When SquEnix released the 1st Tomb Raider they subsequently complained that the game did not meet their expectations in terms of sales and now they've just cut their customer base by less than half, potentially endangering the success and profitability of Rise of the Tomb Raider. 69% of the sales of Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition were on PS4 and only 31% of sales were on Xbox One.

This move also shows that Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix are not confident in their own game. They don't believe it will be successful on its own merits. They'd rather have a company like Microsoft pick up the slack rather than have its quality and value judged by the free market.

Indeed. And it could endanger the sales of future sequels as well. I would be far less likely to buy the sequel to a game I couldn't play because it was an exclusive to a console I didn't own. A really bad business move by Squenix, unless its just a timed exclusive and they are prevented from saying that it is until some later date. Even so, its damaging to your potential sales on the other platforms.

Oh well, Squenix has been criticized before for making idiotic decisions. Like making the next major Deus Ex game a mobile title.

Well this is only a timed exclusive for 2015.

Tomb Raider did finally turn a profit late last year after passing the 6M mark.

Microsoft is paying a good amount for Rise of Tomb Raider, which should make this game profitable really fast.

Once this game goes multiplatform in 2016, it should be more profitable than the previous game.
