Hello. Green day are not punk. Neither are good Charlotte nor Blink 182. I would not count the Clash as punk either because their songs have nothing to with anything to do with punk. They have been known to do country music for God sake. SEX PISTOLS!!!111

The only "popular" bands are those that are supported by their record company (aka, they pay the radio station to play the song). This is a simple fact. Radio stations tend to only play what they are BEING PAID TO PLAY.

I do not doubt that there are numerous "mainstream" bands that are good. Sadly, I can't think of any at the moment (at least, current bands).

However, as you know (given previous messages I have seen from you), there is a multitude of great bands that have never seen the light of day because they are on record labels that have no weight. Bands like Mushroomhead, Pitchshifter, Cop Shoot Cop (now defunct), Firewater, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, and Clutch (my obvious favorite, hence my avatar), just to name a few.

I think this is why many people disregard mainstream... it all ties into a deep-seated dislike of what is popular.

I completely see your point.

I know that there's a lot of mainstream that is "juvenile" and ignorant, but there's also a lot of good bands out there that are mainstream (in my opinion).

What i hate is people saying that they hate mainstream just to sound "cool" because they are oh-so-mighty "rebellious."

I think both mainstream and underground have its ups and downs, and people just need to expand their minds, and just filter out the bad things and keep what they like, not caring about mainstream or underground.

EDIT: BTW, what do you guys count as mainstream? like, how far up the ladder do they have to be?

AFI is a prefect example of what going "mainstream" is. like said before, changing the style, disenfranchising original fans, and signing to a major, for one reson, to SELL RECORDS, and MAKE MONEY. as Aleking said, AFI was once underground, but they went "emo" in 2003 to get more popularity, now you hear them Z-100, and see their records in Hot Topic. that is the epitome of selling out. Anti-Flag also fits this description well.

    Ok. Let's get this straight.

I hate rap, hip hoppity hop, pop, UGH--POP.

And poser bands--Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco.

I'm more into post hardcore these days (yep--there's another term for it though)

From First To Last, Chiodos, Underoath, Armor for Sleep, Thursday

all the Warped Tour bunch. I had a chance to go this summer, but couldn't.

Some Pop-Punk is good though: Academy is..., and yes...AFI...though some of you may disagree, I liked their mainstream switch. They had a chance to mature and darken their sound from their old, short, and quick paced melodies (they had albums with 20 songs...each at like 1:30?)

And what I like to call...political punk:

    Anti-Flag, Against Me!, Rise Against

    And there's a term for political punk: "anarcho-punk" 1.gif

Sorry, but I really dislike old school punk. I like the modern Warped Tour punk they have these days.

And yes--I used to enjoy Panic! At the Disco--until everyone started making a big deal out of them...and little 12 year olds began liking them. That's the time I stop listening to a band. When the tweens pick up a copy of the CD.

Same thing that will happen to the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus. If it's not happening now.

Let's just say...I was "jumping" before anyone knew about the Apparatus.

And it's ok if Rise Against is on MTV...I don't watch MTV...it's too bubble gum poppy. MTV does not influence the music I listen too since I don't even know if the bands I like are even showcased there. And I think Rise Against is more of an MTV2 Band...not MTV--which is just a load of [expletive]

EDIT: Don't even get me started on Simple Plan and Good Charlotte

Warped Tour music is not punk.

And hating a band that you used to like solely because everyone started to listen to them kinda makes you a poser (in a "reversed" manner).

stick to what you like, and screw everyone else

I would call Warped Tour punk...it's just a more modern version of the genre, and happens to appeal to me.

As for Panic! At the Disco...I'd been listening to them for a long time and I was getting sick of it anyway (they only have 1 album out)...just as I was getting sick of the band...all the little wannabes came.

Nearly 2/3 of people that say they "love panic!" have only listened to I love sins not tragedies.

"Old school punk"? I didn't realize there was any "new school punk". (Maybe they use four chords instead of three or less, I dunno.) I'm curious, if you don't like old school punk, what do you listen to that's different and is STILL punk? (And Puhleeeeze don't say Green Day or Blink 182) EDIT: Oh yeah Gurrukud, your last statements from your last post should be etched in stone and considered to be gospel!Truer words were never spoken! Words to live by and die for!

Really can't stand the new wave of screamo/emo/punk crap. I'm sorry but bands like Panic at the disco probably seem "great" when your 15, but you'll care less about them when you reach 30. Formula rock at its best.

Top me it sounds like terrible PR fad of the year screamo. Also what up with toned down flock of seagulls hairdo that all these bands like Fall Out boy and such are sporting?? Fad alert.

I think some people have the wrong image of punk, or what is "punk" music.

The bottom line is I like bands who have an intelligent aspect ot their songwriitng and can play well, even being punk 4.gif

Punk doesn't have to be 2 chords and screaming, and gimmicky ala Sex Pistols.

Whoever mentioned the band Wire is spot on. They were more of a art-punk band, which are more or less the ones I like. Bands like Husker Du, early replacements and the minutemen(well they were more early hardcore) I think qualify as this.  Ramones really are the kings of punk though.

I mean alot of bands from the sixites like early Love albums could be considered "Punk". Velvet Undergorund had a punk attitude, and really I think that is what defines punk. It's an attitude, not wearing a AFI t-shirt. Velvets White Light/White Heat album still buries pretty much any "puk" album today or since. That was made in 67'.

Devo were a form of punk. Punk is an attitude, so it can hold many forms.

Never liked metal, I do like a few bands such as Ministry though.

Bauhaus to me were a post-punk group. If you listent to their music they were a punk band at heart. The Goth stuff they created and millions ate it up. Listen to thier first album its one of the best punk/post-punk records ever.

Most of those warp tour bands are pretty much emo/screamo. Which is basically pop music trying to be punk or hardcore.

Interesting you mention Wire, Darko! For a band that a lot of people have never heard of (in the US, anyway), I've seen many, many bands of all types that cite Wire as a direct influence on their music! I remember when Elastica came out with their first CD. Everyone was saying "Wow, you have a unique sound! How do you come up with all this cool stuff?" And (I forget her first name) Fleishmann said "Oh, we just basically rip off Wire cuz we're all friends, they're our favorite band and they influenced us so much!" She went on to say that "Waking Up" was almost a direct take of one of their songs. A lotta bands with an unconventional or unique sound say that Wire was an influence. Cool band!

Goth is a form of punk. It was an "evolution" from it that started in London, that's why some early bands like Bauhaus have that punk sound to it.

i dont wanna pick any fights or anything (or maybe i do)

but im gonna have to say blink 182 is just as punk as the ramones are.

    listen to cheshire cat

    dude ranch

    buddha

those three albums are about as punk as you can get

after that, blink 182 CREATED the pop-punk genre with enema of the state and take off your pants and jacket

and finally, switched over to a more alternative rock genre for their last album

fight over that one for a while...

Well I guess you can say that for sure to a degree.

But I would argue that the Ramones actual catalog of songs were much much better. I think you would be hard pressed to find many if at all any people who think Blink 182 are better than the Ramones. Other than a few teenagers who aren't n aware music existed before 1993.

The Ramones pretty much started a culture. Besides even the music, that alone is more than what only a handful of bands could ever have the dubious honor of being linked too.

hmmm.....many bands that have been mentioned are pretty weak....well...not anti flag...but all the pop crap...blink 182 and all that....

i thought this was Punk rock....but then again we are comparing the new "music" to classic punk...well maybe not classic, but a major factor of punk itself.....anyway how did Green Day get mentioned again.....not punk people and I aint picking on it...just stating facts.......

Of course, the ramones are better, have more history blah blah blah, but i blink 182 are literally contemperaries of the Ramones. The both created their genre and helped evolve their genre. During their time, the ramones were pop-punk too. The only difference is, the Ramones stuck with playing the same music in all their albums, Blink 182 changed their ways of expressing themselves through music. IMO i think this makes them better, but that "change" is usally what makes them considered "un punk"

    my 2 cents
