Day-Night light Cycle?

I'm having some troubles with the daylight cycle. For some reason, nightfall would never appear in my game. I am aware of the function 5, 6, and 7, but I have a laptop which requires me to hold shift as I press the function. I pressed 5 and 6, as those are instant changes, but they would not ave any effect. Someone please help me, since would like to see my city's skyline during the night.

one more problem, I realized that my sound and music is not playing in the game. Is a file corrupted or something?

What are your graphics settings on?  Check in the options menu and make sure to use the hardware rendering setting.  You can also go into the 'God Mode' menus and see if you can force eternal night from there.

For your music and sound fx, again go into the options menu and  make sure they are both turned on.

For the sound, did you ever use the properties of your game shortcut to turn off the sound? You may need to turn it back on using the same procedure before you can use the game controls. I'll have to check again, but I think I've had to do that before.

one question, how do I find the sound property on my shortcut? I've looked into it and found nothing to do with sound. If it helps, I'm running windows 8.1.

The sound option is -audio:on or -audio:off.

I think you have more trouble than the game.  Have you run dxdiag on that machine?  The fact that your game runs at all means that the multimedia equipment has been detected, but if it is not functioning correctly dxdiag will tell you.  To start dxdiag open a terminal and type in the command.

For some reason the upgrade to Windoze 8.1 seems to be causing a lot of problems.  If you could back out to 8.0 your problems may go away.

I don't believe that I can downgrade to 8.0, and dxdiag said all was good. I have a feeling it is 8.1 though. It was working well until the update a few months ago.

Some people have had trouble with 8.1.  Funny how even numbered releases from Microsoft seem to be full of garbage.  Any chance you could reload Windows 7?

Failing that, you could join us in the outer fringe with Linux.  A recent test I made with it (see my article in the Linux Corner) indicates with the current version of Ubuntu and the latest wine beta, you can just load up and run.

Unless you need some application that is specifically Windows oriented, you could get across on any weekend.  Linux quite happily reads/writes NTFS (Windows) files.

I have been thinking of linux and thinking of swithcing, but I do run many strictly Windows programs and I'm not too sure about compatibility. I cannot reload 7 as it was the first OS installed on the operating system and I do not have access to a disc. I guess I'll just stick to jazz. It actually is very nice while building a city. I thank everyone who contributed to this thread.

It's something you would have manually added  to the target line of the shortcut by typing something (Moose gave an example above). If you don't remember doing it, you probably didn't.

I would be unaware of that being possible.

As for the day/night-cycle, have you tried actually using the buttons in the godmode menu rather than the shortcuts?

I have fixed the cycle, sound is still not working. uss, I don't think I downloaded anything that would do such a thing

I'm not sure if Windows 8 has this feature (I'm currently using Windows 7), but have you tried Compatibility mode?  In Windows 7 you can click on properties of the .exe files and set the compatibility mode to earlier versions of Windows.  If Windows 8 has this feature try setting the compatibility of the SC4 exe file to Windows 7 or earlier and see if that resolves the issue.

Your kidding!!!  Did you have SC4 installed when the computer used Windows 7 as the operating system?  When you converted to Windows 8 then 8.1, did you leave SC4 on the computer?  My only suggestion left would be to uninstall SC4 and then reinstall it.  See if the game works then and/or you can use the Compatibility feature.  Of course, you run the risk of not being able to get the game working again after reinstalling it.  You will have to weigh the benefits and risks before starting such an undertaking.  Good luck.  Hope it turns out well.

Remember the ultimate defense.  If thy operating system offends thee, pluck it out.  With a little fooling around with your BIOS or UEFI you can install Linux as a dual boot, and play SC4 under Linux/wine.  The only cost for this is some of your time, the learning curve, and some disk space.  No money need change hands.

i'm not kidding. but sc4 did work fine in windows 8 original. I think i'm going to just download a soundtrack and see if it works.
