I heard back in October that Maxis is "Exploring the possibility of an offline mode." Do you think Maxis will go through with this? Because I want to know whether I should buy it or not. Speaking of which, is there a mod out there that increases city sizes?

I suspect that last part would shake up the SC2013 community in a big way, but alas, no. We'd definitely heard something by now if there was one out there. :(

It will depend on sales.

If sales keep going strong along with the majority of the users still playing (as it was at the end of EA's last quarter), then not any time soon.

Since my laptop is connected to the internet nearly all time, the online requirement doesn't bother me.

Edit: Many new PC games also have an always online requirement including Diablo 3 and Anno 2070.

So this is gradually becoming more prevelant in PC gaming due to piracy and cheaters

The release of a second expansion pack will be the test of health for the game.

So are you inferring it will go the way of Simcity 2000 and Simcity 1 where very few notice the release of the second expansion pack?

In most cases the first expansion pack does well, while the others that follow only sell to dedicated players.

So yeah only the first expansion packs are the important ones.

So yeah only the first expansion packs are the important ones. I'd probably be considered a "dedicated player" as of right now, I pre-ordered the game, bought every DLC and the expansion pack, and still play the game often, but I won't buy the next expansion unless its either cheeper or tops the first expansion. I still believe this (I've said this before) but I think an offline mode will be end of the patches and DLC and expansions, then they'll either move on to a different game or make the next SimCity game.

I haven't play SC13 since October. For me it is not that fun and is a little oppressive. It does not like it when you create small towns or if you try to create med sized cities with small skyscrapers.

That for this expansion pack they went with future cities - to release the next pack to entail modern times again may feel like a step backwards.

I think they should make the city tiles bigger and fix all the bugs before they even think about releasing another expansion pack.

Well that is a real shame, because I am not really into simneighborhood forced social interaction online, does anyone think they well bring back terraforming in a future expansion pack? Because I don't think it's worthy of the title Simcity without terraforming.

If they do this, then they will have to have CPU AI users...

You can set there difficulty and stuff like when you need something, you don't text the CPU AI, you hit a button of sorts, but if they don't have what you need, they don't send you anything...

:( I can't beleive that. Simcity is like a totally different city builder than all it's predecessors. I mean, everything is searver based, no difficulty whatsoever, and the AI is completel broken. Maxis has a lot of work to do.

The problem is, from the very beginning, the game simply wasn't designed for offline play in mind. In a way, it's like building a car and then trying to convert it into a rocket. Maybe it's technically possible, but not without serious modifications. Just as with a new simulation engine, it'd probably be easier to develop a new game based around a fresh concept. But of course, nothing seems easy these days...

Well to be fair, Simcity 1-4 use the same core engine (hence the graphics)

Obviously you don't remember how many years of patching it took to make Simcity 1, 2000, and 4 fully functional.

Also Simcity 3000 is said to be the easiest Simcity to date, while Simcity 2000 is said to be the hardest to date.

Well, I guess a big part why I like 4 better is what moders have done to it. Maybe If I give 2013 a decade it my become something totally different and fun to play. :)

    Hi,

I got simcity as a gift for my birthday 3 weeks ago and was wrapped untill i installed ,then i had too download the updates and origin which slowed my internet service as i live rural and cant get ADSL or better, so my max plan is 15 gig at $95 a month ,I only had the 8 gig plan at the time ,then quickly rang and got the extra gig to play the game.now i went through at least a gig a day and sometimes 2 gig , thats huge ,just too much ,so the game got very expensive for me fast .$15 a day too play heavy ,So i either play no more than twice a week or i get slowed .

If you want the online only play ,Let your servers cop the uploads and downloads ,dont dump it on the user its just not right.

Now i play many online games all the time and have never had a problem with usage as there servers cop the load.

So my options are not that good unless offline mode is introduced ,i wont keep paying $10 bucks min a day too play ,

So from being a huge simcity fan ,well I,m a bit dissapionted too say the least ,

Dont get me wrong here I love the game and wish i could play more often ,but i already got slowed last night :( so no more for me for 2 weeks and i just got my city to 1 mill pop without shipping anything out,:) YES 1 mill ,lol.

So i hope either offline play is introduced ,or even better ,get new servers that cop the load ,I tell you Its wrong to sell a game then let us cop huge data usage ,Or maybe explain before we buy the game could cost $10 a day to run ,

    Cheers

    Chris

Only the first save takes a lot of data.

Also you should never buy a game that is online based if you live in farm country.

It's not EA's fault you have a bad ISP where you live.

Do you have a coffee shop or McDonald's near you?

    Most provide free WiFi.

Most of us live in  metropolitan areas, our data caps range from 100GBs - 250GBs a month

    Mine is 150GBs on DSL.

Why are you stuck in the rural area?

Also stay away from Xbox One, PS4, Vita, Wii U, and Steam because they will chew through you're data cap with updates alone.

No don't expect an offline mode either, because EA/Maxis doesn't want people pirating the game like they did with Simcity 4 and Simcity 3000 (both were pirated in the millions, possibly exceeding sales).

PC gaming is heading to having an always online function thanks to pirates.

    OMG,

1stly "Only the first save takes a lot of data"

If that were the case i would not have a data use problem,

2nd "Also you should never buy a game that is online based if you live in farm country "

Nowhere did i say i lived on a country farm ,rural ,does not mean country farm, and my ISP is fine for online play ,I play 20 + games online with no worries on data usage or lag.

3rdly, "No don't expect an offline mode either, because EA/Maxis doesn't want people pirating the game like they did with Simcity 4 and Simcity 3000 (both were pirated in the millions, possibly exceeding sales)."

If this is the case you would think with all them extra millions made they wouldnt mind spending a minascule amount to bring there servers up to speed like other online games would you.

I'll close this now since an offline mode is no longer speculation.
