Hi All,

I recently downloaded Sim City 4 as i never really got into it when it originally game out. I want to start to play it again and was wondering what are the basic downloads just to help run the game a bit smoother and those that add certain mods to the game? Any help would be great as i would really like to be able to build some nice big cities!

Many thanks all

We have some pretty good sticky threads at the top of this section to help you get into that stuff. The NAM is very much your primary essential mod, from then on out it pretty much depends on preference. Take a look through the threads aimed at newcomers to navigate a bit.

Wait, you downloaded SimCity 4? Did you download it from authorized sites such as Gamersgate, Origin, or Steam? Or was it illegally downloaded via torrent? If it were torrented, mods will not work as intented. And it's also against the rules of ST. If you downloaded it by torrent, screw that and buy the disk less and fully patched version from Gamersgate, Steam, or Origin. ;)

If you downloaded it legally, then you can start downloading mods! For starters, the NAM is recommended. The NAM fixes the bugged traffic controller and adds some new transit features such as tram-in-avenue, flyovers, underpasses, wider roads, and a fully modular highway system.

The Network Addon Mod for SC13 is now out! Download here.

Yes, the NAM is always a good starting point. Before installing, you may want to take a read over the manuals. These are available digitally The installer provides lots of customization. So it's easy to choose which features you'd like to use or exclude. But don't worry, the selection isn't permanent. The installer can be re-run at another time to add or remove components. You may want to experiment to see which ones best suit your style of play. The NAM does have a strong learning curve, but you'll find it creates endless new possibilities. ;)

There's an enormous amount of content on On the STEX and LEX, I suggest looking at the "most popular" and "highest rated" items. For a list of small but generally useful plugins, check out the current Link of the Week in my signature.

Above all, read the sticky threads at the top of this list and also here.  There is a great deal of information for newcomers in both of these forums.  Also, a perusal of the Omnibus may lead you to tutorial material you want.  The link for the Omnibus is in the page header.

Nonny Moose is right, check out the threads, but remember, it will take a few years to download, test and learn to edit lots if you want to create stuff like some of the really gifted people here. You need to learn how the simulator functions and the different mods work to develop the play style you're looking for. I've built 3 massive plugins folders of 5 GB or more, each taking at least a year to flesh out, so remember to be patient and factor in a big learning curve. But there are lots of people here eager to offer wonderful advice and support, you'll see :thumb:

First you should play for a while, perhaps with only the NAM (to fix the very broken transportation simulation), and then make your way slowly into where you want to go.  I've been playing this game since it came out with hardly any breaks.  I've been through the pin-cushion state of making towering cities, and a few other phases besides.  Now I am building rural communities, probably because I live in one.  I really haven't lived in a big city (Toronto) since 1990.  Since my wife passed away I find myself playing more, and I have downsized and moved to a small senior's apartment, so have little to do to maintain my house any more.  (I really miss my Irish Red and White Setters).

So now I play with rural scenes, but I have one region, which is a version of New York City which is steadily heading towards a population of several million.  At the moment it is pretty sparse and has only 1.1 Million Sims.  Over the next year or so, I expect it will get much larger.  I haven't even opened all the tiles as yet.  I've had this region since sometime last year.

I started playing SimCity back on the Amiga, and since I've played every version. I paid $20 almost 10 years ago for this game, played it off and on for a few years, usually long enough for the game bugs to drive me nuts, then one day I was like, Hmmm I wonder if anyone ever made more maps... 1 web search later and a click on an interesting site call Simtropolis, and BAM!!! What's this? Hmmm, NAM, never heard of it, click to download, install, WOW!!!! My game works now!!?! What's this??!? There's more? Thousands of mods and an entire worldwide community dedicated to building cities? Almost a decade later and it's amazing the things I've seen...

I nearly fell off my chair with joy when I found simtroplis and others.  I was bored to tears with the run of the mill maxis stuff after only a few weeks play.  Now I have a nice size plug in folder and I practice practice new ideas and terraforming and all that.  I have now been playing almost 2 years.  Let me emphasise using a test region for trying out many new things as it sure does beat damaging a region you love!  Mostly, enjoy, experiment, try out new ideas!

Well, this is not an instant-on phone app.  Instant gratification is not built in.

SimCity 4 uses a large, complex simulation to operate as a problem solving puzzle.  The more problems you solve, the more there are.
