People eating tasty animals ou gens mangeant les savoureux animaux.

La Bardot should never have become involved in trying to prevent people from earning a living.

FREE THE COWS! FREE THE SHEEP! FREE THE PIGS! STOP DUCK DISHES IN CHINA!

At least the seals are having outdoor lives, although I do think they should wait till adulthood to get the meat. Let em' have a seal-y bedtime adventure before putting em' in a burger.

Moo.

With all the people protesting eating cows and pigs and whatever the heck else, I feel outrage coming.

Homo Sapiens is an omnivore.  To get the equivalent of meat or fish protein you have to eat a lot of weeds.

Yes indeed.  Seal meat is one of the few sources of meat in the Arctic.  A favourite of Polar Bears and Innu.

Beef and horse gobbling Europeans should mind their own business.

Cheval burgers are not to my taste, probably because they are unavailable in most of Canada.  Venison, ostrich, moose, and a few other meats are available.  I rather like the Jamaican goat curries you can get in the Jane/Finch corridor in Toronto.

And, of course, the mighty nimrods can take to the fields and put all kinds of things on the table.  If you don't break your teeth on the shot, squirrel stew is reputed to be tasty, but there is not much meat on a squirrel and they are likely to be either rabid or carrying other nasty things.

What does moose taste like? It's practically an all-Canadian delicacy, so I won't be able to try it any time soon.

Moose, like any venison, is very short on fat.  You pretty much have to bard it to do much with it in big hunks.  Has a distinct taste different from deer, probably due to the diet.  Remember, moose like to feed on aquatic plants, often from the bottom of the pond.

Bagging one wild moose will feed a family for about a year.

Let's see . . .   Bard (transitive verb):   to dress meat for cooking by covering with strips of fat

    Yeah, I'll pass on that.

I've found that I've gotten less and less adventurous, food wise, as the decades go by.  I've always been rather picky.  (I like to know which part of what animal is involved.  I am leery of mystery meat.)  But I think the window is closing on my learning to eat new non-plant sources of food.

I know that most food taboos are either mentally or culturally generated.   Regarding seal meat, the thought is in my head that they are endangered but they are also a major food source for the Iniut.   The rest of us have other options so why drain the seal population unnecessarily?  I just can't go there.

I'm the same with bison.   I learned at a young age that bison were endangered.  They no longer are but I still can't eat them.

As for horses, they are one of the few American taboos about food.  I suspect it's because horses were more valuable as work animals and transportation (gotta get across that plain somehow) and eating your horse was counter productive.   The regulations about horsemeat have recently changed but it is still not available in the average supermarket, at least where I live.

All of which is easy for me to say:  I live in an area with a robust food chain connected to abundant resources.   I would probably feel differently if my options were more limited.

Well, Meg, I hope you know the origin of the term "The Horse Latitudes".  This little gem seems to have stuck to the geographers since the days of sail.

Oh my God Bison tastes better than beef.  Only had it once and couldn't get enough of it.  As for seal meat, never had it and don't plan to unless it's the only thing left to eat.

Bison is also on the "avoid" list for us old folks who have gout so I won't be trying it anytime soon.   The anti-gout diet is practically semi-vegetarian, which is a pain since I also have to go gluten-free.    My cooking skills fall short of what is needed for my ideal diet.

But I'm with you on the seal meat:  don't plan to eat it unless it's the only thing left to eat.

(and before someone asks: what is a semi-vegetarian diet?   One where animal products are drastically reduced by American standards.   Meat is eaten but not every day and certainly not at every meal.)

Gout is a real pain as I've watched my father in-law suffer from it time to time.

Well, I am genetically disposed to gout, but don't have it thank heavens.  My father suffered greatly with it.  I have pretty much stopped eating high purine meats such as beef, venison, moose, etc. except on rare occasions.  It is one of the things that comes with ageing.
