They should shut up and eat their porridge and tofu.

The ironic thing is that PETA's idea of ethical treatment for animals is to euthanize them. But they are giving people trouble over keeping meat?

It's unfortunate that they've gone to taking themselves way too seriously.  They do support some worthy causes but its easily lost among all the idiotic activities they embark upon.  I've given a fair sum to animal welfare charities but I have a real problem giving them credit, much less cash.

As a Canadian, I back the annual seal hunt.  The seal hunters, by and large, live in a subsistence economy and don't need interference from international celebrities seeking photo ops.  By bringing attention to themselves through opposing the hunt PETA has done both parties a serious disservice.

 

PETA should be more thorough before they start making noise about things.  They might consider how much harm they might cause.

Humans are omnivore animals, so they need both meat and plants to survive. Of course you can limit the amount of meat you put on your plate, which is good for both your health and the environment, but you don't have to replace dairy milk with soy milk just because of a few hypocrites. I'm sorry but I can't take PETA seriously.

Yeah, nobody really takes PETA seriously. You know how at Pike Place Market in Downtown Seattle, they often toss fish back and forth at each other? It's become quite famous and often this is shown on TV for Seahawks football games when they come back from a commercial break. A few years ago, PETA complained about this, and of course nobody listened to them because really, there's nothing inhumane about tossing fish to each other.

Every locale has its own meaty traditions. There are aspects of life that you should have your own thoughts on, and no one should force you to feel a certain way. What you eat is a simpler example of that. Why should any group (PETA) have any rights to tell you not to eat meat? Granted, you can express your opinion on eating meat, but don't be aggressive.

Also, never show PETA Philly's Reading Terminal Market. More meat than you'll ever see.

Next time you are in Quebec, see if you can find a place that serves Phoque Burgers.  Seal meat is quite tasty.

Seal burgers?    I find that I have lost any interest in trying new sources of non-plant based food.   I guess I'm getting old and cranky.

 

I'm not saying that the locals who subsist on seals should stop doing so.   But there aren't enough of them to go around to everyone so I'm fine with leaving it at that.  Most objections to eating animal products are based in how the animals are treated in the factory farming process.   Hunting and fishing usually don't involve the designed restrictions that factory farming does.

 

But what is PETA doing other than using a sad story to gain attention?   This story falls into the ever-growing category of "What is wrong with people?".    I'm putting both the family and PETA into that category.

Since you mention the family unit, Meg, I should remind you that the destruction of the family unit is considered one of the root causes of the fall of the Roman Empire, along with the dissolution of religious belief.  This should sound familiar, since our civilization is headed in the same direction.  We never learn anything from history.

 

As for PETA, someone should rub it over with bear grease to see if it makes it stop squeaking.

I was referring the family in the article who were watching their relative's corpse rot, not the family unit in general.

 

As for the family unit in general, I see the nuclear family as a failed experiment.   It has only been in vogue the last century or so and is, in many cases, unstable.  Two adults are not sufficient to absorb the stresses of raising children.  It may not "take a village" but, in general, children with at least five involved adults in their lives do much better than those with less.

 

In times past, that wasn't a problem because extended family was the norm.    There were always grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc around.    Since the industrial revolution, not so much.

 

But we digress.

Well, thanks to ag-gag laws paid for by the factory farming lobby, such activity is quickly becoming illegal in this country.

Generally speaking, puppy mills are atrocious.  About the only way to stop them is for people to stop buying animals from pet stores.  Only acquire a dog or cat from a reputable breeder who is a member of the appropriate association.

 

With horses, the demand is less, but anyone who would starve a horse would likely starve a child as well.  If anything, domesticated horses are more vulnerable to mistreatment than other animals.  Can't think of anything severe enough for people who mistreat a horse.

 

Purchasing a pet is a two way street.  You must be prepared to be checked out by the breeder, the breeder must be checked out by the buyer.
