Ocram's Razr

(Visual) Effect of City Specialization on Industry

I recently noticed when I started my first drilling-focused town (and my first town to mine its own coal for its coal power plant), that some of the low-tech/dirty/heavy industry factories and some of the mid-tech/manufacturing industry factories had vats of oil in them in the cities that drilled for oil but not in the cities with no access to oil. I could take pictures if you want me to.

Do these private factories that seem to use petroleum take some of my petroleum? Do other specializations (besides tourism, which generates hotels) alter the way factories look?

Ocram's Razor: Though "more things shouldn't be used than are necessary," they're just too fun to pass up! Expect many verbose arguments from me. I will try to write abstracts before or short summaries after from now on.

Words to live by:
"Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit... But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually..." 1 Corinthians 4-11

"Do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:34
"Do not judge so that you will not be judged. For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you." Matthew 7:1-3

I've noticed this too, the city's RCI are themed the the same as your city's specialization.  Some of my electronic cities develope hotels, so I look and see that I have a few thousand tourists.  I take advantage of those few tourists by playing landmarks or maybe a low wealth casino and have a major specialization in electronic and a minor in tourism.  I might as well make money off tourists if they come to my city.  Anyways if you haven't noticed, coal mining towns have coal based industry.  I think I remember a video from before the release of the game when they were saying something about how the industry forms to your specialization, but I don't think they take your resources.  However in the new expansion they will take your Omega production, but you get money from them taking it (from what I understand).  I think I mentioned that in the Cities of Tomorrow post.

Besides oil, coal, and tourism you have electronic and trade.  I don't normally count trade as a specialization because you need trade to have a successful coal, oil, or electronic city.  And electronic cities have their own theme too based on whether you use the community collage or the University (high tech industry) .  However if you do trade as a solo specialization, I don't know if the industry has a specific theme to them, unless it's the generic theme.  The way I play trade would be hard cause the prices change every hour apparently and I'm guessing it's every real life hour, not game hour.

To directly answer your questions, no they don't use your resources and yes other specializations alter the way your Industry and Commercial (in the case of tourism) look.

Hope that helps.

The industries defiantly change based on your specialization. A mining HQ in your cities changes all your industries to a red/yellow theme, and you will see coal hoppers and names like "Extraction Inc." or "Mining Co" on your zoned industry. As far as I can tell, this is really only a cosmetic difference, as I never see any of these factories consuming coal.

Same goes for the Oil HQ, that tends to change your factories to a teal/orange combination with big oil tanks on their parcels. You can actually see the change happen. Zone some industry, at first the building sits vacant and in its standard colors while it looks for workers. Once it opens for business, a small set of blue rings radiate outward from the base of the building, and its colors change to that of the appropriate industry. (yellow/red for mining, teal/orange for oil) etc.

I'm not sure if electroincs specializing has an affect, I don't have any electronics cities right now.

Commercial signage also changes when you have universities or casinos. I'll have to check to see what the business areas of my electronics city look like.

that reminds me, if you have a university city you will also get greek residential buildings, they only produce students and are low density, high wealth buildings though
