Ben: Very nice!

Cacks: Oh boy. Have fun with that 3.gif

Anyways, I have here an aerial overlay map (all images are clickable)

aydina_ravennametro_12_29_2010.png

And am working on a to-scale transit map. Currently only highways and their interchanges, and some major roads. Work in Progress

I don't know what to put here anymore.

Might be a bit of necroposting, but meh. :3

I just wished to upload the renewed version of my Sedona city transit map. Basically, what I did was a major in-game revamp of the subway network. Now the system is more efficient, since twice less trains would technicially be used in the current setting; it is also less complicated to understand. Most lines were merged (U1, 2, 10 and 11, or U3, 8, 17, 44) and the S-Bahn was tweaked to cope with the overgrowing conjection on all of my rail lines.

Mainly added more expansions in city districts previously unscathed. What I mainly worked on was adding more detail; I've therefore spent countless hours renaming every and each of my cities' schools, hospitals, monuments - up to bus stops and a few major roads. I also cleaned most of the obvious absurdities that plagued my city ( Lili Elbe International Airport within a sea of skyscrappers for instance ), and obviously made it greener. Sedona lost 250'000 inhabitants in the process, but at least now it's credible. Most station names come from Irish or Scottish names (Inishmore being an Irish isle); many are based on Cologne real places, there are a few Settler-VI and The Elder Scroll names in, a few SC4-based stations (Core Center), and countless streetnames based on like-minded and/or held-in-high-esteem people. A very few are purely made up and a couple come straight from Berlin ^^

Multiple stations also seem to work wonders in-game. Separating traffic in Cropsfordstr / Willestr (a 3D version of the train station being online on Second Life, for those interested), for instance, placed both subway stations from red to green in terms of congestion. I've been trying it on other knots - the ten stations at Sedona Hbf, Loreleistr / Jorgensonstr, Wutai East Station, and Bocklemünd -- quite a nice trick that adds some desirability in the process. :3

As for the actual software used to do the map... Paint.exe. Nothing beats it. :3

Hahah, that one reminds me of Berlin's U-Bahn/S-Bahn network.

But remember, start small. Some cities have very small metro systems, featuring 2 lines (Baku, Cairo, Athens and Pyongyang), and some even have only 1 (Haifa and Bangkok). You don't have to make a giant system. You can have a great looking small one.

Something that quickly comes to my mind -- I've seen some people import and do rather detailed maps , including terrain. Is there a tool or nifty software that could "export" Simcity cities into layered graphical files (like, a jpg/png)? [Not importing a SC4 city in the Sims 2 sort of stuff] I've good enough with my Sedona, so I'm about to attack the other two cores of my metrpolises, and I was wishing to experiment with something geographically accurate for the (much) smaller system in Rathlin - though I don't picture myself trying to place everything oh so correctly in Paint, I've literally spent a dozen hours on that one Sedoner map ^^

Also indeed, the design is an hybrid between London and Berlin styled maps :> the line signage is Berliner 3.gif And thanks ^^ SC4 is the only game that got me hooked for years, and I wanted the pinnacle of my Sim skills to be so huge 4.gif I'm rather proud to say all of my lines are crucial to the city economy and the least used section is at 120% [though I later doubled or tripled tracks to keep in the yellow], though this has to do with the place being so insular and few bridges being built (and of course subject to tolls, I wasn't going to let my sims nipple away free of charge now was I? ^^). I admit I'm a bit of a transportation/railroad junkie, then.

Finally, indeed in most Simcities that do need a transportation system, three/four subway lines are well enough (besides they tend to become costly). Sedona and its conurbation are just that needing, and even then, the cities are dense (maybe 2'000'000 people in half the size of Paris?).

Now I wonder how do they figure out the arrangement of the "lines", their stops, and how they make sense of it all while making them.

Building slowly, tons of labelling, and most of all, trying to keep interchanges to stations. I find it rather easy to use one tunnel per line - besides it proves effective, because in stretches with two, three or more lines together, you double or triple the capacity (which emulates, 85% accurately, having twice or three times more frequency on the particular stretch of railway).

I've been adding some stuff on my map of course to make it more realist - the fare control icons, the "no opposite crossover" which simply indicated which stations were the basic default model at some point, the "disabled friendly" stuff..though the park and rides and the bus hubs remain applicable. It requires much imagination. ^^

And with it, the (almost) final version of my own subway map - with all extensions built and, as expected, skyrocketing at 210%. I haven't built the U1 extention yet. I'll do that when my CJ gets to that point. :3

SedonaU-Bahn2012-2.jpg

And the older, and MUCH more complicated version (hell how much tunnels did I remove?)

SedonaU-Bahn2011t.jpg

I'll soon post 3D-rendered stuff from Lili Elbe and Willestraße stations 4.gif

There is no set program. If it can draw lines, you can make a map with it 4.gif

I'm going to need about half a million street names by the time I'm done with this 46.gif

Jakehh: Thats a good idea! Really good!

So, first you gotta go down Balth St, turn right onto Yoshi Ave, go about a kilometre or so and turn onto Nathan Rd. If you've hit Pipcard St, you've gone too far.

Naming streets after simtropolis users, nice and funny idea. Some cases might still be... a little weird, for example deathtopumpkins Avenue might be a bit strage for random sims reading your map 9.gif

Ciuu Street doesn't sound so good, either... 1.gif

You could simplify it, as I used in an example before.

How about Ciuu Way?

The SimNation DeathToPumpkin Fairgrounds will officially appear in my next version of my maps ^^ good idea 9.gif

Semiano...I use paint. The paint. You know that *****ty MS default program. 3.gif

Joe, why don't you name your streets a bit less..random? Weir and Gilde Streets easily make up ONE street separated by what seems to be a roundabount (or a tuned down Westminster Palace by any luck)

Your maps are all great. From a real newbie perspective, would be nice to see them on a CXL map. I haven't gotten a city larger than 300K, transit and road congestion are killing me. I do everything with side-by-side one-way streets. Is this my best option? Also, I have a hard time seeing where to run my bus routes ...

all suggestions gretly appreciated.

Hey welcome to ST veija!!!

To your question, I can't answer that, but to fix the congestion, build more transit things(Buses, etc). That's all I could say on your issue

Translated in English. *wonders what her name translates as in Simlich*

Veija. Basically, your CBD should be made in a 4x4 avenue grid. Work with a spinal grid - not a full grid, but main roads that eventually give way to smaller streets that branch out. You might wish to use highways, and tolls seem to have an effect (people avoid them). That's from what I've deduced, and I've tested many cities. Besides, irregularly grided cities tend to work betters with subways.

As where to put your stops - bus stops must be placed at busy intersections and likely hubs. Subway stations..I tend to use them as an upgrade to busy bus lines (a bit what happens in real cities, one could say). You might wish to use a U-Bahn / S-Bahn / regional rail hybrid. Each city has its own characteristics (unlike what that faulty physicist can say), and you'll need to experiments. Don't try a NYC subway system - its useless, unless you have a centralized 20'000'000 region. The NRW model works much better in polycentric places.

Finally, you might wish to use the NAM mod. The basic Simcity 4 transportation model is a bit faulty and irrealist (Sims don't walk more than 20 meters ?), and NAM fixes a lot of irregularities.
