thank you TekindusT, but I'm not quite sure what you mean. Are you talking about the color changing junctions where there are no stations?

A couple of maps I've been working on for the city of Canterbury in Kent. Yes, Canterbury East really is about due South of Canterbury West, and Northgate really is about due East of the both of them. Confusing, I know.

(Apologies if the images are rediculously oversized. I'm not used to posting in these forums.)

Wonderful map. I had the pleasure of visiting Canterbury the other weekend, charming town! I love how it's not just me who likes to make maps for their home-towns, no matter how small.

I'm still working on it....Black for railways, white for streets, gray for minor arterials, yellow for major arterials, and orange for limited access arterials (freeways).

How the heck do people plan these complex rail/subway networks in their games? How do they know where to put the stations?

For mine, I use the region picture to help me out. Subway maps I photograph the lines in-game and use it as reference.

Many transit maps are topological, so their position on the map is not actually where that station lies in real life. It is not to scale, and the distance between stations on a transit map is usually equal.

This is Melbourne's (my homecity) rail system to scale. Now compare that with the official transit map:

I meant how do you know where you're supposed to plop the stations in areas/neighborhoods? I never made a subway system because I never really got to that point; how do you make a realistic and cool looking subway network and not just a grid of subways?

Grids can also be realistic - New York's subway is a sort of grid, as is Tokyo's.

Some older cities have a 'spokes of a wheel' approach, although if/as they grow, they often find that avoiding the city center would improve journey times.

As far as in game, if I think a city of mine is going to be big enough to support a subway, and I want a subway to be non-grid, I'll just grow the city that way - higher densities along the subway routes, lower densities between.

When I'm talking about a gridded subway, I'm talking about a literal grid, like gridded roads.

I think a ring with "spokes" radiating out is a good idea.

It is true that, in general, the game SC4 prefers a grid for its subways to be most effective. One thing that helps to have a successful non-grid subway system is to build a non-grid city. If areas have open water, or large natural areas, that can help. If I get time I will see if one of my cities works like this. Its subway is a pseudogrid, although when I map it for this thread it does not look that way exactly.

I want to build something like Tokyo, which is like a semi-grid (?).
